New York
The first day was fine. She was too busy to really use her brain to think about what she was doing. The first night wasn't a real problem either. She was tired from signing books, and hugging and smiling. Plus, it felt nice to have the bed to herself for once. She could hog it completely without an annoyingly adorable blonde trying to squish herself in her arms.
Big spoon my ass.
Day two in New York was just as hectic, and there really wasn't the time to miss anyone. But then the evening came. And with it, a phonecall from a very upset and teary Alex who refused to go to sleep without a kissie.
"Baby, I'll be back soon." Grace soothed, "Just three more nights and I'll be back to tuck you in."
"No!" Alex cried down the line. Grace's heart was breaking. She could hear Hannah admonishing Alex in the background.
"I'm sorry Princess." Grace whispered, "If there was any other way, I'd be home right now with you and mommy, I swear."
Alex sniffled, "You don't love me anymore..."
"What? Alex baby, that's not true!" Grace gasped, "Princess, I love you so much! I just have to work."
"You promised you wouldn't leave!" Alex screamed.
Grace heard the phone crash to the ground and the pitter patter of tiny feet running away.
"Grace?" Hannah's voice came through her phone, "Baby, I need to check on Alex, I'll call you back okay?"
"Yeah sure..." Grace muttered, trying her hardest to keep the tears at bay.
"I love you Grace." Hannah whispered before hanging up.
Grace clutched the phone to her chest and flopped on the bed, crying into the pillows.

"She's asleep." Hannah told her half an hour later.
"I'm coming home tomorrow." Grace whispered.
"Grace babe, you can't. You have to be there." Hannah told her, "You can't just leave."
"I can't do this Hannah." Grace started crying, "I can't. I need to be home with you guys."
Hannah tried to sooth her through the phone, "Sweetie, baby, love, you can do this. I know you can. This book is so important to you. You can't leave yet."
Grace sniffled loudly, "You heard her Hannah! She thinks I don't love her anymore! I have to come back."
"Oh Gracie..." Hannah sighed, "She'll come around, she's just tired. What if we'll skype tomorrow? Maybe it'll be easier when she can see you?"
Grace agreed, though it still felt like someone was repeatedly jamming an icepick through her heart.
Hannah told her all about her day, and really tried to distract her from the pain of being so far away from home. One of the reasons that she loved the little blonde so much.
"It's going to be just fine Gracie, she won't even remember in a few days." Hannah said when she realized that Grace wasn't really listening.
"Yeah I know..." Grace muttered, "I think I'm going to bed now."
"Okay, I love you Gracie, and so does Alex."
"I know. I love you both too." Grace swallowed heavily, "I miss you Han..."
"I miss you too baby." Grace could practically see the blonde's sad smile, "I can't sleep without you trying to smother me in my sleep."
Grace chuckled, "Shut up! You're the one who clings to me like a koala!"

The third day, Grace felt oddly refreshed the next morning. Hannah had entertained her by bickering with her over all the stupid, adorable things they did. She'd fallen asleep with a smile on her face.
She'd sent her girlfriend a quick text during breakfast, and then it was off to the battlegrounds again.
The entire morning, Grace smiled, took pictures and signed books. It was the best thing ever. Meeting fans still felt completely surreal. And having her very own PA who went to fetch her lunch was even more surreal.
Still, she was extremely grateful when the man showed up with her salad. She happily dug in, but she couldn't help but think that the homemade salads Hannah made for her were way better.
Home.
With a pang of guilt, she realized she hadn't checked her phone since that morning. She fished it out of her purse and turned the thing back on. Disappointed didn't begin to describe what she felt when she saw that Hannah hadn't even responded to her goodmorning text.
It was so unlike the blonde to not reply. Usually, whenever Grace left her phone unattended she got a bunch of texts from Hannah, just little updates on life, or adorable declarations of love. But now, nothing.
Grace refused to think about it too much. Hannah was probably just busy. But she wasn't. Grace knew her schedule, and Hannah had made sure not to plan anything while Grace was away, so that she could be home for their daughter.
She tucked her phone into her pocket instead of in her purse, just in case Hannah would try to contact her.
She tried to let it go, but hearing nothing from Hannah, not even a 'goodmorning', wasn't doing her mood any good. And she wasn't even thinking about little Alex, who thought Grace was leaving her behind.
Could this trip suck any harder?
Yes, it could. New York weather decided to turn against her as well, and being used to sunny LA, Grace wasn't prepared at all. She was soaked to the bone when she arrived at the hotel lobby, and to make matters worse Hannah wasn't answering her phone at all.
The elevator doors slammed shut in front of her, and Grace thought she could cry right there in the lobby.
Finally, Grace got to her room, and she couldn't wait to just wash this day off of her in the giant bathtub, maybe even order a bottle of wine, because why not?
"Oh fuck no." Grace cursed when she saw her door was unlocked, "No, no, no!"
That was it. The final drop that made the bucket of emotions flow over. If she forgot to lock the door this morning, no doubt all her stuff was gone. Her laptop, her camera, her harddrive...
"Please no." Grace whispered to herself as she pushed the door open.
Grace almost fell to the ground when a tiny force collided with her legs at full speed.
"MAMA!!"
"Alex?" everything she was holding fell to the ground, and she lifted the little girl in the air.
"Surprise!" Hannah chuckled from the bed.
Grace squeezed the kid a little tighter, still not fully realizing that her family was actually there, in the room with her.
"Oh my god..." She whispered, completely overwhelmed with emotion, "Oh god."
"Mama?" Alex frowned, "You're not happy?"
Alex surly tone shook Grace from her reverie.
"Oh sweetie, of course I'm happy!" Grace kissed the little girl, "I'm so happy! You guys! I didn't even know!"
"That was kinda the point." Hannah smiled, getting up and wrapping her arms around both girls, "I thought you would appreciate some support."
Grace relished in the feeling of Hannah's strong arms around her, "I love you so much. So much."
"I love you too baby." Hannah grinned, pressing a chaste kiss on her cheek.
Alex prodded Hannah's head, "Pizza now?"
Hannah chuckled loudly, "I had to promise her pizza on the plane, she wouldn't sit still."
Grace laughed, "Seriously? I turn my head for to three days and you're bribing our child with pizza?"
The blonde shrugged, "I had to be creative. We were in the air."
"Sooooo pizza?" Alex tried again.
"Yes Princess, we'll get pizza." Grace smiled.
New York wasn't that bad after all.
