Pacifica has tears in her eyes as she watches through the bus window. As we wave, she waves back, smiling as if everything is fine. But deep down, the three of us know it's not.
Finally the bus drives far enough away to the point where Dipper and I can no longer see everyone. We sit down in silence. Only the wheels rolling against the pavement saves us from drowning in the quiet.
"You miss her, don't you?" Dipper questions.
"Of course I do," I answer."I miss everyone. Everything. The only damn place we'll ever fit in and belong, make friends..."
"I feel the same way, Mabel," he admits."Now we have to go to eighth grade... then high school... but at least we have each other, right?"
"But Pacifica has no one!" I burst into tears. I can't help it. We can't leave her.
  "Oh, Mabes..."
"I already miss her so much."
"She misses you too. I know she does. But we can't let the past hold us back. We've had some pretty great memories this summer. Don't focus on the downsides. Just think - maybe we'll come back next summer."
My heart beats faster and a smile spreads across my face. My eyes light up and widen.
Maybe this isn't goodbye. Maybe it's just a 'see you later'.
  See you next summer, Pacifica.
