Chapter 2: The Woods
My eyes felt heavy on my face. I waited a few hours to have enough strength to open them all the way.
The car had spun off the road after hitting that guy. It rolled down a long hill until it eventually landed on its side in a ditch in the woods.
The police officer hadn't been wearing a seatbelt and had been thrown through the windshield. I could see a long trail of blood where the officer's body had slid. The old man's mangled body was laying a couple yards away.
I felt an intense jolt of pain in my leg. I grasped my knee very hard. I had a large gash in my right thigh. I must have scratched it with something sharp during the crash.
I looked around the environment. If it weren't for the crash, it would be kind of peaceful out here in the forest. The chirping of birds found itself in sync with the rhythm of my heartbeat. I just wish I could have been out here on a better occasion.
I glanced to the policeman and shouted to him with an inkling of hope that he was still alive. "Hey! Hey officer! Are you all right?! I'm still cuffed back here!" No response. Shocker.I looked at the shotgun laying on the ground just outside the shattered windshield of the car. I found myself wondering why the hell the police officer had his gun out. What possible threat could have required a shotgun right now? I fumbled my hands around in the handcuffs for a few moments before I realized that I wasn't going to be getting out of them without the officer's key. "Dammit." I muttered angrily to myself.
I look at the window in front of me. I kick it four times before there was a hole large enough for me to fit through. I threw my hands up toward it and grabbed the handle. Using almost all of my remaining strength, I dragged myself out the window.
I hit the ground with a loud thud. That hurt almost as much as the gash did. I pulled myself up onto my feet and let the blood in my leg flow a little bit. If I didn't fix it soon, I knew I was going to bleed out. Holding onto the side of the car, I limped around to the other side, near where the officer was.I walked up to the shotgun by the side of the car and spent a great amount of effort in attempting to bend down and pick it up without losing my balance and falling onto the ground. When I finally did manage to grab it, I looked inside and found there were no bullets in the chamber. Perfect. It would be easier to carry with my cuffs off, so I set it back on the ground.
As I approached the dead man lying on his face. I noticed his keys in his back pocket. It was a good thing the keys weren't in his front pocket. I chuckled to myself. I reached down and grabbed them. I started to put them into the cuffs, but dropped them clumsily. They landed in front of the man's face. I reached down to get them again.
Right as I grabbed the keys the man sprung up at me with great speed. The pupils in his eyes had lost all color. His skin started to turn green. He wasn't human anymore and he was trying to sink his teeth into my arm.
I pulled away fast, taking the keys with me. While limping away as fast as I could, I took the cuffs off my wrists. I was limping slowly, but not as slow as him.
When I reached down to grab the shotgun that flew out the window, he was ten feet away. The gun was empty. I looked around for a bullet and found one on the other side of the car.
I limped around to get it. When I picked it up he was five feet away.
I tried to put it into the gun but failed and dropped it onto the ground. He was two feet away.
I managed to pick the bullet back up off the ground and loaded the gun. "Don't make me do this!" I yelled at him. He grabbed my arm.
I took the shot, firing it into the man's face. I slumped down the side of the car, staring at the second person I had killed. "His body's all rotten...and he smells like crap...what the heck is this?" I asked myself.
I made out a small figure up the hill a little bit. It looked like a living person. I called out to them. "Help! Go get someone! There's...there's been a shooting!" The small person turned around and left. I hoped they were going for help.
I glanced to the right and saw a walking corpse emerge from behind a tree. My mind filled with fear as I got up and ran away. There was another one. Something told me they had the same intent as the police officer. The more I ran the more of them appeared. By the time the car wreck disappeared from sight, there was a small army behind me.
I spotted a tall fence and ran for it. I conjured up the last of my strength and hopped it. That fence saved me from the army of groaning dead beating against it. And I was thankful for that.
