Chapter 35: The Freighter
"We got something up ahead." Kenny's words echoed in my mind and woke me from my nightmare. I slowly got myself out of the chair, being careful to rest Clementine's head down on a pillow.
I made my way up to the front, yawning as I went. The sun was blinding to me. It had only been one night, but after what happened last night, it seemed like an entire week had gone by overnight.
"Da**it." Kenny swore. "Road's blocked." Kenny put his foot on the brakes and the RV slowed to a stop. "Now we gotta deal with this."
Between our side of the road and where we needed to be, there was a small freight train. It had only two cars. It looked like it had more, but they were all derailed in the back.
Kenny, Ben and I all got out of the RV and approached the giant road block. If getting past this train didn't determine our survival, We might have given up and turned around. However, getting past this train did determine our survival, and we had been through too much to give up now. "Is there any way to get around it?" Ben asked.
"Doesn't look like it." Kenny replied. "On foot, sure. Can't really afford to do that now."
I looked around at the vast forest on either side of the road. We could get to the other side by foot, but there was no way we could fit the RV around the train. "This seems like a safe area." I said. "All this brush will keep any walkers from sneaking up on us."
Clementine jumped out of the RV, with her backpack strapped to her back. She frowned as Katjaa helped a wounded Duck out of the car. I could tell that Duck was getting sicker. The boy that was once full of energy and life was fading away from us day by day.
Ben turned to me. "Why don't you and I go look around?"
"Yeah." I agreed. I spoke to the whole group. "Everyone stay here and relax. Clem, stay close to Kenny and Katjaa, ok?"
She nodded, proceeding to sit down on a log with Katjaa and Duck, and continue her leaf rubbings with a leaf she had just found. I thought she was trying as hard as she could to forget about Lilly and Carley.
"Lee," Katjaa spoke. "If you come across anything to drink, if there's a dining car or something; I think Duck is a bit dehydrated."
"It's a freighter, hon." Kenny told his wife. He turned to me. "Be careful in there."
"What?" I said sarcastically, walking away from him. "You think there might be something dangerous inside an abandoned locomotive? Hadn't crossed my mind."
Ben was standing in between the two cars on the link. I climbed up to him. "You happy you stayed with us all this time?" I asked him.
"Yeah!" He answered immediately.
"Really?" I thought that the whole ordeal with Lilly would have thrown off her opinion of us.
"Yeah." He continued. "It's with you guys or dead. I woulda died out there in the woods...just like my classmates."
"You think this is better?"
"Yeah, of course."
I looked in the direction we came from. Somewhere in that direction was a suffering woman. At least, there was if she hadn't died already. "What would you have done with Lilly?" I asked Ben.
"I don't know." Ben crossed his arms in confusion. "Left her? I've never seen anybody kill someone like that before."
"You've seen a bunch of other stuff by now."
"Yeah," he shrugged, "but not like that."
"So..." I started. "Was it you?"
"Not this again." He scratched his head.
