Chapter 18: The St. John Dairy
It was a quaint little farm. There was an old white-painted house up on the hillside, and a glowing red barn down to our left. Surrounding the whole place was a barbed wire fence. I looked closer and noticed small red wires line the barbed wire. I wonder if their fence really worked. "Here it is." Andy presented his home to the group. "The St. John family dairy."
All of us stood in awe of the electric fence. "Y'all can see how we've kept this place so safe." Andy pointed to the fence.
"The fence keeps 'em out?" I could hear the doubt in Mark's voice.
"You betcha!" Andy answered. "They fry like bugs in a zapper. We're pushin' four thousand volts through those wires with generators and amps."
Carley seemed stunned. "I'm going to assume that's a lot."
We approached the front gate of the fence. "This is a really brilliant set up." I told them.
"Suits us just fine." Andy said.
Carley looked around at the farm. "This place looks untouched!" She exclaimed. "You'd never know the rest of the world is in ruins."
"It's worth protectin'." Andy pointed to the generator. "Hence all the juice."
An old woman in her 70s walked down from the house on the hill. She had brown hair worn in the same style Katjaa wore hers in. She must have been Andy and Danny's mother. "I thought I saw y'all with company comin' down the drive!" She said.
"Guys." Andy introduced her mother. "This is our mama."
"I'm Brenda St. John, and welcome to the St. John Dairy!"
"This here's Lee!" Andy told his mother. "He's from Macon!"
"A couple of our old farmhands were from Macon!" Brenda exclaimed. "They grow 'em good there."
Danny spoke up. "They got a couple more friends stayin' at the old motel."
"Oh my goodness, that place is pretty vulnerable." Brenda told us. "You got someone with survival experience to lead your group?"
I decided to stick with my answer before. "I've got things under control over there."
"Well I hope you know what yer doin. That place isn't safe like it is here."
She had with her a wicker basket filled with steaming biscuits. They looked like heaven on earth to me. "Now that y'all are here, we'll make you safe and comfortable."
"Does that offer apply to the rest of us?" I asked.
"We're all incredibly hungry!" Carley blurted out.
"These are for y'all." Brenda extended the basket to us. "Baked fresh this mornin'."
