Chapter 11: My Brother
As Carley, Glenn and I came through the back door of the drug store, Kenny greeted us. He saw we got Glenn back and smiled at us, but then found the grim look on our faces and put one on himself. "Everyone alright?" He asked.
"Yeah." I put my hand on his shoulder and spoke to him. "We had some close calls, and Glenn is fine, but...well yeah...we're alright."
Glenn didn't even glance at Kenny to talk to him. The girl's death at the motor inn hit us all pretty hard. "I've got a few cans of gas for your pickup in the trunk of my car."
"Good to hear it." Kenny said softly.
Carley walked into the conversation. "And things back here?" She asked.
"Quiet." Kenny shot an angry look at Larry. "Our 'friend' is still in and out over there. He won't survive any more stress."
I had a feeling Kenny was getting too much spotlight of being group leader. "The next order of business is getting those pills outta the pharmacy." I spoke up.
Kenny gave me a frustrated look, but seemed to accept my decision and nodded. He turned and went to attend Katjaa and Duck, who were still recovering from the run-in the boy had with the walker.
I walked over to talk to them. They didn't seem to notice I was there. "We can't let anything happen to Ducky." Katjaa told Kenny.
"I know, hon." He responded. Kenny turned to me. "Hey, Lee. You really have that old man hell."
"Yeah. We got pushed y'know." I crossed my arms and looked at Duck. I was glad I made that call. Duck looked like he was recovering. Thank God, he wasn't bitten after all.
"You don't have to tell me." Kenny made a violent twisting motion with his hand. "I was ready to tear the man's head off. Anyway, we, Kat and I, appreciate the support."
"Thank you, Lee." Katjaa spoke gently.
"How's Duck doing?" I asked.
"He's ok. It was just a shock." Katjaa patted her son on the head.
"We're lucky as hell nobody got nabbed on the way in here." I looked around the room. Everyone in here was lucky to be alive.
"No kiddin'" I said.
"How's she doing?" Katjaa asked me. She looked at Clementine with her kind, motherly eyes.
"She's good, I think." I looked to Clementine also. She was sitting by herself on a stool behind the counter reading a magazine she had found on the rack.
"She's a tough one, right there." Kenny said.
"She's just a little girl, Ken." Katjaa told him.
Kenny turned back to me. "What were you sayin', Lee? She spent days surviving on her own?"
"That's right."
"Not just any little girl could do that." Kenny's words reflected his confidence.
"What's the plan?" I asked Kenny.
"Hang tight, I suppose." He said. "Seems pretty dangerous out there, so we oughtta wait for things to clear up."
"You said your family was from Macon?" Katjaa asked kindly.
The words hit me like a stray bullet. "Yeah." I looked away from her, trying to divert the subject.
Katjaa's eyes widened with concern. "Where are they? Should we go looking for them?"
I thought about lying, but I decided it was time to face up to the fact that I had no family. "They're...gone."
"Oh my goodness." She got up from her chair at the coffee shop they were sitting at and embraced me. It felt good; a warm feeling during these cold times. "Do you think...how?"
