Chapter 50: Anna Correa
I dropped with care through the hole in the roof of the school. "C'mon!" I yelled up to Molly, who was still on the roof.
"Later." She yelled down. "I got some things I have to take care of first. Catch you later."
I jumped up, attempting to reach back up to where she was on the roof. "Wait! You still got the battery!"
She crossed her arms. "Yeah, I think I'll hold onto it. Make sure you guys don't leave without me. See you back in class!" She saluted as a joke just before running off.
"Da**it, Molly!" I yelled. "What the hell are you doing?"
I shrugged and walked back to the command center. Molly was going to get us all killed. She did have a bit of elegance to her getting around though...No. I wasn't going to allow myself to get in the same situation I got in with Carley. Relationships don't last in this world.
I passed the glass doors and saw Kenny and Brie burst through them holding a can of gas while they went. "A little help here!" Kenny cried.
I ran to him and braced the door as walkers piled up against it. He dropped the gas can onto the ground and the hatchet with it. I bent down to pick it up, but the walkers started to break through. I pushed the doors back closed but a walker's skull had been caught between the doors. "F***!" Kenny shouted. "Doors won't close all the way!"
"Lee! Do something!" Brie pleaded. I took my gun out of my pocket and shot the walker out.
"We got it!" Kenny exclaimed.
"Brace the door with something!" Brie yelled to me. I looked down to the hatchet that was just out of reach. I reached for it with my leg but to no avail. There was no way.
I held my breath and let go of the door. I grabbed the hatchet up quickly and pressed my body against the doors once again. I stuck the hatchet between the door handles.
"Think that'll hold?" I asked them.
"Da** well better." Kenny slowly backed away from the door to see that it held the walkers behind the door.
Brie raised her hand to her mouth and her eyes welled up. "There's so many of them..." She clearly had not been out of that little room underground much.
Kenny picked up the gas can. "You got the fuel!" I said excitedly.
He started walking back towards the kindergarten room to drop off the fuel. "Let's not start high-fiving each other just yet. Let's get the hell back at the classroom. Give us a hand with these fuel cans. They weigh a da** ton."
I picked up the other fuel can on the ground and walked it to the classroom. Kenny was right. They really did weigh a lot. "You're back!" Clementine exclaimed.
"Yeah." Kenny smiled at her. "And we made out pretty good too."
"Great work, Kenny." Ben got up from his crouching position at the armory door. I could see he was trying to mend the bond between them.
"How's that door coming?" He asked Ben.
"Not so good." Ben shrugged, crossing his arms.
"Here." He walked over to the boy. "Let me give you a hand." He leaned down to the armory door. "You get that battery yet?"
"Yeah." I rubbed my head. "Molly has it. Should be here soon."
"She'd better be." Kenny sighed.
Brie walked over to the map, looking dismayed. "Brie?" I asked, walking over to her.
"Hey Lee." She wiped a tear from her eye and turned to face me. "Thanks for all that help back there. I don't think we would've made it without you."
