Chapter 47: Hatching a Plan
Vernon reached the bottom step of the stairs and sat down in the living room with the rest of us. Christa, Molly, Vernon and I all sat around the television like a family, waiting for Kenny and Ben to come inside with his verdict.
"Omid's doing okay?" I asked Vernon.
"As well as can be expected under the circumstances." He answered. "I did what I could for him, cleaned out the wound. But he's got a real infection. Without antibiotics..."
"At least it's not THE infection." I said, walking back and forth from one side of the room to the other.
"Will you quit pacing?" Molly asked, not being able to meet my eyes. "You're making everybody nervous. I acknowledged her request and sat down.
"Why are you even still here?" Christa asked her threateningly. Christa still didn't trust Molly. I didn't either. She didn't seem trustworthy.
She turned to Christa, feeling hurt. "Hey, if your friend really can get that boat working, you're taking me with you as payment for saving your a**es. I figure that's fair enough, don't you?"
We all heard the door creak open and turned around to see what happened. Kenny and Ben emerged from it with solemn faces. Kenny sighed. "You want the good news or the bad news?"
"Let's get the bad news out of the way first." I replied.
"Bad news is she's not taking us anywhere in the shape she's in right now. Gas tank's empty and the battery's dead."
Christa turned around to see him, worry in her face. "What's the good news?"
"That's it." Kenny seemed happier saying this. "That's all she needs, some gas and a battery. Other than that she's good to go."
"Well how are we supposed to get that stuff?" Christa asked angrily.
I thought the possibilities through. Everything in Savannah had been stolen and taken to...Crawford. "Sounds like Crawford is the one place that had everything we need. Maybe we should try there."
Vernon attempted to get up from his chair, but Christa pushed him back down in his seat. "Now hold on a minute..." He said.
"Surely we have to try!" Christa shouted. "If there are people left in this city who are still alive, who still have supplies, what harm can it do to ask?"
Vernon tried to get up again and was allowed to do so. "Trust me. You don't know these people. I do. You showing up with a wounded man? Might as well put a noose around his neck. They don't exactly welcome children with open arms either."
Christa covered her mouth. "What the hell kind of a place are we talking about here?"
"The worst kind." Molly leaned against the wall. "But I don't see any other choice here."
Kenny walked into the middle of the group. "And just how do you figure we do this? Because from what I've heard, that place ain't exactly friendly to outsiders."
"That's putting it mildly." Molly agreed.
"We're armed and we've got the numbers." I look around. Vernon looked frightened at my suggestion of an attack. "I say we just go in there and take what we need by force."
Molly walked up to me and pushed me out of the center of the circle. "Okay, that is literally the dumbest idea I have ever heard. Crawford's like a da** military base. They've got hundreds of people in there armed to the teeth, and that perimeter in there is guarded day and night. You're gonna have to be smarter than that."
