Chapter 56: Leap of Faith
My arm was on fire. Of course, how would I know? My arm was laying on the autopsy table above me.
I raised my left arm to myself. My arm was cut off just above the elbow. I wish she had cut it off below the shoulder. That little bit of arm was just dead weight. "Holy sh**..." I muttered, and let my head fall back to the ground.
I scrambled up. Christa immediately embraced me. "Oh my god, you're alive! It was getting to the point that we thought you weren't coming back."
"My arm's on fire..." I groaned. "I can still feel my fingers. Hell, this hurts more than you can believe."
"Do you think you'll be able to travel?" Christa asked me. "You lost some blood."
Our conversation was interrupted by the constant beating of the walkers against the door into the morgue. By the amount of groaning I heard, I guessed the entire room was full on the other side of that door. "Yeah." I answered her.
Ben was becoming frantic. "The elevator's open! Let's go!"
We all ran up the ramp to the elevator. They had opened the doors all the way. The elevator itself was gone, but there was a ladder leading up the elevator shaft. "I'll follow up the rear." I told them. "I don't want to bleed on anyone."
We all walked into the shaft. I looked up. It was hundreds of feet. I had to climb it with one arm. Christa looked up too. "We're gonna have to go up as quietly as possible to see if we can make it to an empty floor or even the roof. You think it's possible for you?"
"Yeah." I answered. "Get going."
Ben went up first. Omid followed after him, and then Christa. I followed up the rear like I had said. I put my feet on the steps, then reached my one arm up as far as I could and caught the next bar, then repeated the process. This was not easy, but it was manageable.
"You okay down there?" Omid whispered. "Remember, quiet!"
"It's no big deal!" I whispered back up to him. "Another arm would just get in the way." He laughed at that and I managed a chuckle.
We climbed a bit more. I heard a gunshot from the other side of the wall and jumped. I kept climbing and a body fell out of no where. It almost hit me, but I was able to duck out of the way in time. Once again, Silly zombie. You can't fly. I climbed a bit more and was startled to find tens if not hundreds of walkers on the next floor alone. They were even in the buildings.
"Everything okay up there?" I asked quietly.
"I think I just peed myself." Ben replied.
"So yes then?"
We emerged on the roof of the building. I brushed off my knees. This building was a hospital. The scene on the roof was a disturbing one. Someone had begun writing the words "NO HELP" in white paint on the side of the building. The painter had gotten halfway through the last letter, and his ladder had slipped and fell. I saw a trail of blood and paint leading from the site of the fall to the edge of the roof.
We walked to the edge and gazed down at the land below us. There were thousands of walkers down there, roaming around, searching for their next meal.
"Wasn't this city EMPTY not too long ago?" Omid complained, running a hand through his hair.
Christa scowled. "Those Crawford b******s did one thing right, I guess."
"There's thousands..." Omid turned away from the city. He couldn't handle it anymore.
"It seems like they followed us here." Ben said.
"It seems like it..." Omid turned back around. "But that can't be...can it?"
