Chapter 19: The Perimeter

When Mark and I told Andy we were ready to clear the fence, he told us he would turn off the northwest section so we could go and pry the bodies off. Apparently, the fence could stop a zombie in two or three seconds, but would get overloaded if they left the husks on.

"So how's the place looking?" Mark asked me, when we were about a hundred feet away from the house. "Is it safe enough for us to stay...if we can?"

"It's pretty amazing what they've done with this dairy." I admitted. "But, let's see what it takes to clear the fence before drawing any conclusions."

"I can't wait until everyone's out here." Mark told me. "Everyone except Larry..."

"Why the hell did you have to go and tell him I thought he was a racist? As if tensions aren't high enough!"

"Sorry man, it just...popped out." He couldn't look me in the eye. "I mean, you did admit it right to his face."

"I try to be civil, at least."

"He's too busy being cranky to notice." Mark finished.

We came upon our first corpse. It seemed to be hunched over the top wire of the fence. A crow had been sitting on top of it, picking at it's rotten left shoulder, until we arrived. Animals could do the nastiest things...

Mark let out a disgusted grunt. I kicked its leg, just to make sure it wasn't coming back. "Lee, it's dead." He told me.

"C'mon, let's push it off." I said. It had the shaft of an arrow sticking out of its head. I pulled it out. At first I wondered why someone would use a bow and arrow anymore, but then I realized a bow and arrow wouldn't make any noise to attract the walkers. I wondered why we didn't use them.

I took my axe and put it to the body's shoulder. It took great force to topple the body off the wire, but I was able to do it. "Come on. There's probably more of them."

Once we started walking again, Mark spoke up. "Once this fence gets patched up, this place will be a fortress! Can you imagine not having to worry about the walkers anymore?"

"Yeah," I started. "well it's useless without gas. We may need food, but the St. Johns need gas too."

"Not many drivers right now, Lee." He said. I agreed with that. Anyone who could still drive must have owned a motherlode of gas cans in their home. "We could scrounge up a year's worth of gas, easy. They got the place tied down pretty well."

"These folks are just delaying the inevitable." I thought Mark shouldn't be so eager to jump into the arms of complete strangers. "This place is going to fall apart, just like everything else."

He sighed. "Maybe you're right." He spotted another dead walker on the fence. "There's another one."

This zombie was a girl that looked like she was in her 20s. It was grasping the wire very hard, leaning on it with her entire body. I pushed it off with my axe, but still ended up attached. She was still holding on to it. I chopped its arms with my axe. I figured leaving the hands on the wire wouldn't overload it too much.
