Chapter 53: Saying Farewells
Christa had tears streaming down her face. Ben hadn't said one word all the way home. Clem held my hand on the way. Kenny remained very distant. Vernon was grieving over Brie's death. Molly didn't seem to care about any of us.
When we strode through the door of the mansion, I put my hand on Christa's shoulder. "Christa. Everything okay?"
"Omid!" She cried. She willingly let the tears flow as she ran up the stairs, not knowing what she would find at the top of them. We all ran up to Christa and Omid's room go find the man passed out on the bed...or dead...
Christa was holding his hand with one hand and had the other one under his head. "Christa, don't!" I yelled. "Stay back!"
She put her forehead on his chest and cried into it. "I never should have left you...I'm so sorry..."
"Christa, get away from him!" Vernon shouted to her. Even the doctor was afraid of Omid being dead. He would have had to deal with the infection the entire time.
The man started making groaning sounds. He slowly got up from his resting position. He put his hand behind Christa's neck and pulled his face toward hers. He kissed her. Omid was alive. "Hey!" He laughed. "Back already?"
She started laughing and crying at the same time. "What the hell was that?" She wiped the tears from her eyes.
Omid laughed a little more. "I just wanted to freak you guys out. I spent the whole time you were gone thinking about how I could do that when you came back."
I laughed too. I was glad that my friend was alive. "Well, it certainly worked."
"We got you medicine." Christa squeezed his hand tighter.
"Good." Omid squeezed out the words. Vernon walked over to him and knelt down, holding the meds we had found at Crawford. "Feel like I could use some." Vernon pulled a pill out of a bottle and put it into the man's mouth.
Ben walked to the foot of Omid's bed. He couldn't look at anyone. The boy was in a state of depression. "You okay, kid?" Omid asked him. "You look worse than I do."
Kenny scowled at Ben. "We almost didn't make it out of there because of this a**hole. We shoulda left him behind when we had the chance." Kenny turned his scowl to me. I could tell he didn't mean it though.
Omid's joking attitude stopped here. "Guys. What the hell happened out there?"
Kenny exited the room. "Let someone else tell you. I got work to do."
"Okay." Vernon told the sick man. "With a little luck, you should start feeling better pretty soon. I'll stay here for a few more hours to check on him. Let me know if you need anything."
"Thanks, doc." Omid closed his eyes and laid his head on his pillow.
"Yes." Christa wiped the tears a way. "Thank you so much!"
Vernon walked toward the door and turned back to me before he walked through it. "Maybe it's time for you and me to have a little talk. In private."
I followed him out the door and he shut it behind us. He made a gesture signaling to keep it down. "Listen, man. About what happened to Brie..." I said.
"Please!" He barked. "Save your sympathy for someone who's buying it."
"What?" I was confused and taken aback.
"You don't think by now I've got you figured?" He explained. He scowled at me. "You don't strike me as someone who has a lot of consideration for others. Look at what you did to get me to come with you in the first place. You expect me to believe you give a sh** that it wound up costing Brie her life?"
