Chapter 25: Humanity

The blood scattered over Lilly's face was her father's. Her scream was so piercing I couldn't help but cover my ears. I'm sure the St. Johns heard it too.

The scene was grotesque. The only thing left of Larry's face was the bottom lip down. Everything else had exploded outward when Kenny dropped a salt lick on him.

Lilly and I both turned around. Kenny now had murderer's blood on his hands. "Kenny?! What the f***, man?!" I yelled at him.

He started backing away from the scene muttering the words "I'm sorry" over and over. "I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry...it just...it had to be done."

I got back up and turned all of my anger in the situation towards my friend. "You don't know that!!" I yelled at him.

"Yes, I did! And so did you!" Kenny was beginning to get on my nerves. "I was counting on you, man." Kenny walked over to Lilly and her father's corpse and tried to express his sorrow.

Lilly pushed him onto the ground in a fit of rage as she erected herself. "Don't you f***ing touch me!!"

Clementine was standing in the corner, crying to herself, trying to shield herself from everything else that was going on in the room. "Is it over?" She asked me, as I walked over to comfort her.

"Yes." I responded. "For now. But we still need to find a way out of here." I hugged her as she started bawling. "Shh. I know. I know. But you gotta be strong. I need you to be strong right now. Think about something else...something hopeful..."

"Like what?" She asked, wiping the tears off her face.

I tried to think of something happy for her, but the only thing I could think of was the farm. "Gettin' out of here." I told her.

"We're gonna get out, right? You found a way out?"

"I'm working on it." I stood up, looking around the room.

I walked over to Kenny, who was pacing back and forth as far as he could from Lilly. I opened my mouth, but Kenny spoke first. "I don't wanna hear it, Lee. You think I liked doin' what I did? I'm the one who couldn't stand to watch the family dog get put down. But if we wanna survive this sh**, we gotta have the balls to do the hard thing." He scowled at me. "Or at least one of us's got to."

"You talk a big game. But would you do the 'hard thing' if it was Katjaa or Duck?"

He answered almost immediately. "It's never gonna come to that. Not if I have anything to do with it."

"For all we know, the St. Johns might've-"

"No!" He screamed. "No, they need Katjaa, remember? She's the whole reason they brought us here. And no doubt they're using Duck as a bargaining chip."

"I hope you're right." I patted him on the back.

"I know I'm right. I just gotta get to them, that's all."

"Look, if we're gonna survive this sh**, we've got to work together. Do you really think Lilly's gonna work with us after what she just saw you do?"

Kenny spoke very calmly for what was happening. "If she wants to live, she'll work with us. If she doesn't, then the hell with her."

After that comment, I couldn't stand to talk to the man anymore. Kenny was a stubborn man. Nothing was going to get in his way. I decided to take my words to Lilly, who was still kneeling down by her dead father. She spoke first just like Kenny did. "He was still alive, Lee. He was still alive..."

"I'm sorry, Lilly. I truly am. Larry and me, we may not've got along so great, but I know he would've done anything to protect you. He was a good father."
