Chapter 49: Molly's Grudge
The door was marked with an X. The groans of the dead echoed from inside. Brie sighed. "This was Mr. Derek's room." It didn't matter whose it was. It belonged to the dead now.
I stood there for a long time, just staring at it. For some reason, this got to me. These people were monsters. They kept these walkers captive for a reason I didn't even want to think about. "Just keep moving." Molly told me.
"Here." Brie said pointing to a room in the corner of the hall. The plaque on the door read "Mrs. Baker." It saddened me. School kids used to walk these halls every day. Now there were none.
I opened the door slowly and peeked in. "Looks clear." I said. "Everybody in." My group followed me into the room.
There were a lot of play sets around the room. There were posters along the ceiling that read the alphabet, uppercase and lowercase. The desks were too small to fit my knees under. This room was a kindergarten classroom. The door in the corner of the room read "armory." These men were twisted and sick.
I attempted to open the armory. The door was locked. That figures. Kenny walked over to me and we glanced at the chalkboard. There was a detailed map of the neighborhood with labels and lines. "Looks like they were using this room as some kind of command center." Kenny said.
"So what's the plan?" Molly asked. "What are we gonna do?"
Kenny opened up his mouth to say something, but Brie answered for him. "Here." She said, pointing to a location on the chalkboard map. She stared at it for a few seconds. "Just give me a minute."
"Where can we find some fuel for the boat?" I asked her.
"There's a maintenance shed across from the playground here." She pointed to an area on the map with a few pieces of playground equipment drawn in. "If they were storing fuel, that's probably where it would be."
"Any idea where we could find a battery?" I continued.
Vernon took a look at the map and pointed to a square on it. "Maybe in the auto shop here. There used to be one in the alley outside the fire escape."
"Yup." Brie agreed. "It's called Herman's. You can't miss it."
Christa broke through the wall we had made around the map. "What about the medicine?" She asked.
"Right here." Molly pointed to a room in the school just down the hall. "Nurse's station. They used it as a medical facility."
Christa turned to her, suspicious. "...How do you know that?"
Molly blushed and looked back and forth between the ground and Christa. "Just makes sense...doesn't it?"
"Okay." Kenny walked to the center of the circle. "I'll make the run to the maintenance shed for the fuel."
Brie put her hand on his shoulder. "It'll be faster if I go with you. I can take you right to it."
Ben inserted himself into the conversation with much courage. "I'll come too!"
"No." Kenny told him. "Two people's enough. You stay here and see if you can use any of those tools we brought to get that armory door open. We might need to shoot our way out of here."
"I'll go for the medicine." Christa said.
"I'll go with you." Vernon told her. "I know what to take."
"Okay." I agreed with everyone. We all had our jobs to do. "I guess that leaves me to go find us a battery."
"I'll go with you." I could see the blood running slightly to Molly's cheeks. "...to watch your back."
