Chapter 36: Stop the Train
We sat in silence. There was nothing to say. We were headed to Savannah, and Kenny wouldn't allow any talk about his son. Since we couldn't talk about that, there was nothing to talk about. We sat in silence.
Chuck was the newest member of the group, so he was the first person to say something. "Gotta be hard on ya, eh? Three adults...takin' care of three kids...no disrespect, son." Ben nodded, seeming annoyed.
"There were more of us." I told the man.
"Dead get 'em?"
"...No."
"Ah. Livin' got 'em." That pretty much summed it up.
Dark walker blood started spewing from Duck's mouth. "Lee." Katjaa said sadly. "Lee, I need you right now. I need you to go get Ken."
"What's-?" I started.
"Can you just get that off his face, please? My hands are full." I took a napkin from Chuck's stash and wiped up the blood spilling from Duck's mouth. "He's out of time. We need to stop this train."
"Okay." I told her.
A single tear trickled from Katjaa's eye. "Please." She whispered.
I stepped over the link between the boxcar and the locomotive. I paused for a moment before taking the handle to Kenny's room. Kenny was a good man, but he was also a very emotional one. There was no telling how he would take this. I took the handle and opened the door slowly.
"You need to stop the train." I told him. He shot a dirty look at me, and ignored my words. "Katjaa needs you Kenny."
He spoke very heavily and angrily. "Duck will be fine."
"He won't be." I put my hand on his shoulder. He shrugged and pushed it back off. "He's going, Kenny."
"What is the da** deal? He's a little sick, but we can't just quit!" I could tell Kenny wasn't taking it well. "It's a scratch. He's not like the others! F***, all y'all are just makin' it worse!"
"Stop the train." I said, threateningly. He ignored me, putting the train in full speed ahead. I wanted to take the easy way out, but men like this couldn't be reasoned with. "STOP IT, DA**IT!"
"F*** you, Lee."
"You're gonna listen." Maybe Kenny was my friend, but this wasn't about him. It was about Duck...and Katjaa.
Kenny stood up out of his chair to meet my eyes. "Or what?"
I pushed him as hard as I could into the wall. "You're acting like nothing's wrong, and someone's gotta knock some sense into you."
Kenny wound up for a punch. I dodged it and put my hands around his neck. He flailed his arms around violently trying to remove my hands from his neck. The face I held in front of me was one of pain and confusion. Kenny was acting like an idiot. This was more than just his pride on the line. "I told Katjaa I would get you to stop the train, and you bet your a** I'm gonna."
He took his hand off my arm for long enough to punch me full in the face. An angry Kenny fought with the same strength as Larry did. I took a moment to position my jaw back into place.
I couldn't recover fast enough to match his attacks, and he punched me three more times, knocking me on the ground. "Just leave me the f*** alone! I don't need you!" He kicked me while I was on the ground. "And Duck doesn't need you!"
As I got up, he held his fist in the air, but I caught it as it came down, and I pinned Kenny up against the wall. "I don't give a f*** that we don't get along! I'm not letting you do this to Kat and Duck!"
