Chapter 41: The Manor
Kenny slammed the iron gates shut behind us. The fences were high. I doubted the walkers could find us in here. Chuck probably couldn't either though.
"I'll get the door." Kenny said, and ran to the back door of the house.
Omid gasped in pain and collapsed in pain and fell onto the ground. "You okay?" I asked him.
"Ugh..." He slumped up onto the wall. "Yeah. Couldn't be better."
Christa knelt down to him. "You've opened up your wound. You're bleeding..." She looked up to me. "Sh**, that's gonna get infected. We gotta get him inside and clean him up."
I ran over to the door. "Kenny, how's that door coming?"
He shook his head angrily. "I'm working on it! I'm working on it!"
"Well work faster, would you?" Christa stood up and crossed her arms. "It won't be long before those things outside figure out where we went. You know they can smell blood!"
Kenny stood up to meet her eyes. "Lady, I ain't the one who's bleeding."
I stood between them. "Quit it, the both of you! You're yelling is gonna bring more of them down on us. I'll see if I can find a way in." Kenny nodded and Christa did the same.
I took a deep breath. We were safe for the moment. I didn't know how long that would last, but it would be a while if we could find a way into the mansion. The back yard of the house looked beautiful. I didn't think a single walker had come through here yet. Besides the groaning of the dead coming from outside the fence, being here felt like nothing had ever happened. It was peaceful.
My first thought was to talk to Ben. He was standing behind a bush by the wall, looking for a way in through the windows. I wanted to slap him for what he did to Clementine. It was his fault we had to leave Chuck behind. "Ben." I said.
"Yeah?" He turned around.
"Think we can get in through one of these windows?"
"Man, I don't think so." He replied. "Whoever lived her had them all barred up."
"Yeah. Looks pretty solid. About what happened back there on the street..." I ran my hand over my head, attempting to think of words to match my anger.
"I know." He spoke first. "I don't know what happened. I just froze up. Hasn't that ever happened to you?"
"Just hear what I'm saying to you. You put that girl in danger again, and it won't be the walkers you have to worry about."
He seemed taken aback by the message, but then caught himself. "I hear you."
"How do you think Kenny's holding up?" I changed the subject.
"I don't know." He shrugged and crossed his arms. "It's like, all he can think about is finding a boat. He definitely doesn't want to talk about Katjaa and Duck...at least not with me."
I took his shoulder. "Yeah, well that's probably for the best."
I walked over to Clementine, who was standing there staring out the gate we had just come from. I guessed she was trying to keep watch if any walkers came around the corner. She turned around as I approached. "Do you think the dead people saw us come back here?" She asked. "Are they going to find us?"
I could sense the panic in her voice and tried to calm her down. "Nah, they didn't see us. We were too fast for them."
She held her hands behind her back. "I can still hear them out there. It sounds like they're getting closer."
