Chapter 38: Speed Bump

The freight train screeched to a stop without reason. As soon as it was stopped, Clementine and I hopped. "Kenny!" I yelled. "What's going on?"

Then I saw it. Above the train tracks there was a highway bridge. Apparently, a oil rig driver hadn't been paying attention and the back rig of their truck fell off the bridge in front of the train. Kenny wandered out in front of the train. "F***. F***! F***!!"

"Maybe we could walk." Ben suggested, jumping on the train.

"That's f***ing stupid, Ben." Kenny told him.

Ben looked like he wanted to jump back on the train. "I'm just saying..."

Chuck climbed down from in front of the cow catcher. "I dunno." He said. "I ain't got much experience with y'all's fortitude, but this seems to be like something we can deal with. We've got a da** train."

Kenny didn't sound amused. "That thing's not full of milk, Charles. That's gas or diesel. Something that's going to explode."

"You gotta get a hold of yourself." Chuck turned to Kenny. "This is a crew here."

Kenny walked right up to the man's face. "This ain't sh**."

"This-" Chuck started.

He was interrupted by a voice that seemed to come from on top of the bridge. "Yo!" It yelled. "You keep screaming like that, and you're gonna get your face chewed off!"

There were two survivors standing on top of the bridge. The man who had yelled out to us was a shorter man. His short hair was about the same length as his goti. From the look in his eyes, I could tell he was the kind of guy that couldn't take anything seriously. The other survivor was a tall African American woman. She was wearing a purple and white sports coat and a v-neck under it. If they were a couple, like I assumed, they were the most awkward couple I'd ever seen.

"Are you guys gonna be trouble?" The woman asked. "Because we could've just kept walking."

Kenny reached for his gun in his back pocket, but I swatted his hand away. "Define trouble." I yelled.

The guy on the bridge chuckled. "Things that get you killed...or worse." The woman yelled down to us. "It tends to come hand in hand with groups of guys in distress."

"Let's give these guys a break." The smaller guy put his hand on the woman's shoulder.

"We'll see."

"You guys got a problem with your train?" He asked us.

"Yeah." Kenny said bitterly. "You're standing right in front of it."

"Dude, it's a wreck." He replied. "It's not so bad from up here. Send your buddy up to have a look."

I walked forward toward the ladder leading up to the top of the bridge, and Kenny followed me. He stopped me just as I took the bottom rung. "Anything goes sideways up there, we won't let them escape." He told me. I nodded.

I started climbing up to the top. "If I come up there," I yelled to them. "You better not be murderers or thieves."

"I guess you'll have to find out." The woman said sarcastically.

As I was climbing up, I overheard their conversation. It definitely made them sound normal. "A group of guys is what we need." The guy said.

"They're what you think we need." The girl replied. "We're doing fine."

"For now. What about when-"

"Stop it."

I reached the top of the ladder. I approached them. "Hey dude." The guy said. "I'm Omid."
