Chapter 10: Suicide in the Morning

Carley and I approached the motor inn Glenn was trapped in. There was a large neon sign in the middle of the gas station. It had the words, "Traveller Motel" printed in black painting on it. There were gas station blocks in the center. Surrounding them was rows of hotel rooms. It was a simple Motor Inn.

I was so fascinated with the building that I didn't notice the walker we were heading straight towards. "Sh**!" I yelled quietly. "Get down!"

We crouched behind a brick wall we were standing next to. The walker was missing its entire bottom jaw and left eye. I suppose it couldn't take a bite out of me, but I didn't want to take any chances. Carley and I waited patiently for the dead man to become uninterested with this location.

I glanced at Carley. She had her hands clapped together with closed eyes and was muttering quiet words of prayer under her breath. I rested my hand on her shoulder.

When the walker left I peeked up from behind the brick wall. There were a lot more zombies here than when Glenn had described the place.

There was one walker just behind the wall we were crouching behind feasting on a corpse. Another one was sitting down by the back wheel of a car. Another was behind a school bus that had come to gas up, just staring at it. Another walker was standing on the lower level of the motel, by what appeared to be a large axe behind a pane of glass. That would come in handy. The last two were standing on the second level, beating and scratching against a door. There must be a survivor inside.

"Did you see that?" Carley said. I followed her line of sight to a dumpster that seemed to be moving. I thought that might be where Glenn was hiding.

"Sure did." I told her. We walked over to the dumpster. Carley had her gun aimed toward whatever might jump out. It could be Glenn, but it could be some idiot who had been bitten and died in a dumpster. "Be ready to shoot."

Whatever was in there opened the dumpster door slowly. Glenn's baseball cap fell out. "Guys!" Glenn whispered. "Oh man, I'm glad you're here." He jumped out of the dumpster and put his hat back on his head.

"F*** you, Glenn." Carley wiped the sweat off her forehead. She punched him in the shoulder.

"Ok." I told Glenn. "That wasn't so hard."

"Can we get out of here before any of these things notice us?" Carley asked us in an impatient tone.

"Not yet." Glenn pointed to the door the walkers were clawing at on the second floor. "There's a survivor trapped up there."

"No way! We gotta go. Now!" Carley shouted quietly."

"Listen. I was out here looking for gas, and then, from the corner room, I heard crying from the inside."

"Who is it?" I asked.

"It's a girl. We talked and she got frightened. I tried to get in and help her and she started yelling and saying I was bitten." Glenn put a frustrated look on his face. "I tried to convince her I wasn't, and that's when all these guys came out of the woods. A few of them almost got me, and that's when I called you on the walkie-talkie."

"Lucky you." Carley said. "Now let's go."

"We can't just leave her, Carley." Glenn told her.

"No. We can't." I agreed.

"You guys are suicidal." Carley gestured to the room she was trapped in. "Over a girl!"

"I'm saving her." Glenn said confidently. "With, or without you."
