Chapter 12: The Siege
Doug slammed the doors shut. "Man, that was close." He yelled.
"But we did it." I couldn't keep the depression out of my voice. "That's all that matters." I walked over to the left side of the room where Lilly and Larry were sitting by each other. "I got the keys."
"Great." Lilly stood up and hugged me. "God, you're amazing. Lets get in there."
I walked into the office and to the door of the pharmacy as Lilly followed me. The sign on the door read "authorized employees only." I figured what would make me more authorized than the end of life as we know it.
I pressed the keys into the lock and opened the door to the pharmacy. I started walking in, and felt something on the floor tugging at my feet. Instantly a robbery bell pierced through my ears. I face palmed. Of course my dad installed a security system.
"Oh, sh**!" Lilly yelled. "We gotta hurry! Get the meds and get back to the drug store." I ran in and gathered the bottle marked "nitroglycerin pills."
As we entered the drug store I noticed the walkers tearing through every possible crack in the windows and were pressing against the front door.
Katjaa ran towards her son and picked him up in a hurry. "Duck, honey. C'mon, time to go."
Kenny was sprinting through the office. "I'm gonna get the truck pulled up around back!"
"Do it fast!" Lilly screamed in a panic. Unlike other girls, Lilly's panic sounded very calm and controlled. "I need to get my dad out of here!"
"I don't plan on dilly-dallying!" Kenny replied. He turned to Katjaa and Duck. "Honey, take Duck into the office and barricade the livin' hell out of the door behind me!" Glenn ran by and Kenny got his attention. "Glenn! When you hear me honking, come into the alley and start getting people out of here!"
"You got it!"
"Doug, Carley and Lee," Kenny turned to me, as I was attempting to comfort Clementine. "You guys make sure our defenses hold til then! And Lee, I better take that axe in case I run into some of them on the way to my truck."
I threw him the axe. "Here ya go!"
Doug spoke up. "Guys, that door's not locked any more!" As he said that we all heard the creaking of the iron gates falling off the wall. Now the door was our only line of defense.
"Sh**!" yelled Kenny. "You three get on it!" He pointed to Glenn, Carley and Doug. "I'll be back as fast as I can." He ran towards the back exit in the office.
I turned to Clementine. She had tears running down her face. "Lee, I'm scared!"
I ruffled her head and told her, "Stay away from the windows!"
I rushed over to where the three of them were guarding the door. I could hear Katjaa yelling from the back room, "Glenn, we need your help! Please hurry!"
"Take my place!" Glenn said as he rushed off to help Katjaa barricade the door. I rammed my shoulder into the door.
"Hey Lee." Doug sounded sad. "You should know that...if we don't make it through this...I think you're a really great guy."
Now was definitely not the time for friendly chats. "Shut up, Doug!"
Carley turned to Doug with the same intentions. "Doug, if we don't make it through this, you should know-"
Carley was interrupted by a particularly strong heave from the zombies outside. As we begun to push the door back closed, Doug said, "I should know what?"
"Huh?"
"You said I should know..." Doug was interrupted by a couple of walkers that broke down the wall next to him. Now there was a giant hole in the wall letting them in. Doug started wrestling with them and throwing them out, and Carley pulled out her gun and started shooting the heads of walkers who came through the hole.
"I've got it!" Carley yelled. She rushed back to her purse across the room for ammo. Doug wrestled off another walker and came back to barricading the door.
"Clementine!" I shouted. "Can you look for something to stick between the handles? Something really sturdy!"
"Ok!" Clem shouted back. She left and started rummaging through random shelves.
Another giant heave from the walkers and the door sprung halfway open. Doug and I pushed right back. "Clementine! Did you find anything?"
"Nothing." She then replaced her frantic look with one of realization. "Oh wait!" She ran into the office and emerged with...my father's cane. I did tell her it had protected the store. I guess it was going to protect it again.
"The window is screwed!" Doug yelled, looking at the window to his right that had just been broken.
"Go!" I told him. As Doug left, the zombies pushed very hard one last time and I struggled very hard to close it again. Clem handed me the cane and I placed it in the door handles. That should hold them off.
I heard a cry from my left. It was Doug. The walkers had grabbed his shoulder and were pulling him towards their mouths. "Get off me! Get off me!" He screamed.
I heard another cry from the opposite end of the room. "I'm out!" Carley was yelling. A crawling zombie had gotten hold of her leg and was pulling its face towards her. Carley's gun was out of ammo and she was reaching for her purse, but couldn't reach it.
Clementine stood in front of me, mouthing the words "Help them, Lee!"
This wasn't like Hershel's farm. Doug and Carley were about the same distance away from me. I had to make a choice...
I instinctively ran for Carley. I grabbed her purse, opened it and threw a pack of ammo to her. She had the walker on the ground dead in seconds.
"No! Get them off of me, Lee!" Doug screamed from across the room. The walkers became too much for him and pulled him out the window. I heard the last screams of Doug and then the sound of walkers feeding on human flesh. He was gone.
Carley covered her mouth in nausea. "Oh my god..."
Kenny burst through the office door. "Let's GO!" He shouted to us. Clementine, Carley and I all ran to him and through the office.
Carley was murmuring about how they got Doug, and I could hear Larry in the other room barking orders at Lilly. His voice was getting louder. He was coming toward us for some reason.
I heard the unmistakable scream of my girl. I looked down and saw a dead woman crawling up her skirt. I curb-stomped her head until she lost grip of Clementine's clothes. Clementine got up, brushed herself off and ran to the back door, where Larry was waiting for us. The walker was still alive, but who cared? We weren't planning on coming back. I sprinted to the door.
Larry put his hand on my chest as I tried to get by him. "You're not coming with us, you son of a bi***!" He held his hand behind his back and brought his fist with full force to my jaw. The next thing I knew I was looking up at the ceiling, with my vision blurred.
I could hear the sound of the walker I neglected to kill behind me, but I didn't have the strength to get up. Kenny burst through the door, raised his axe and brought it down on the zombie's head behind me. He extended his hand to me.
He helped me up. "I'm not gonna let another man die today...especially not a good friend."
