Chapter 20: Back from the Fence
Andy spotted Mark and I from the porch. As soon as he realized Mark was hurt, his eyes widened and he rushed out to us with great speed.
I burst through the gate to the yard and breathed out heavily with my hands on my knees. "Lee! What's wrong?" Andy shouted to me.
"The electric fence came on! Some people started attacking from the woods and we got stuck between them and the fence!" I told Andy in a panic.
Danny came out of his home, saw Mark's arm and came running down with the same speed as Andy. "Holy sh**! Are you okay?!"
"I heard Mark yell and thought y'all were givin' me the all clear!" Andy seemed saddened. "Man, I'm real sorry."
Brenda patted her hands against her pants as she emerged from her home. "Oh my lord!" She yelled as she noticed Mark. "What happened to you, sweetheart?"
"It was those sons of bi***es in the woods, Mama!" Andy shouted angrily.
"Yeah..." muttered Mark. "I'll be all right once it's out, but...da**...it hurts."
I turned around to find the rest of our friends from the motor inn approaching the gate. "Hey y'all." Kenny waved at us.
Katjaa was the first to notice Mark's wound. "Mark! Oh my god! What happened?"
"He got shot with an arrow." I replied for him.
"Are you gonna be okay?" Lilly expressed her concern for him.
"Yeah...I'm fine..." It was obvious that Mark was not fine. He had a large hole in his shoulder. "I should just...pull it out."
"Oh no, honey." Brenda took Mark by the shoulders and led him toward her house on the hill. "Brenda's got you. C'mon inside now. We'll have you all sorted out." Katjaa, being a doctor, followed Brenda and Mark inside. Brenda started to initiate conversation with her. "So you must be the veterinarian!"
After the two women were gone, Larry approached me with his usual angry expression. "What kind of sh** is this?!" He bellowed.
"We ran into some people on the way up here." I told him. "Bandits, I guess. I think it was them that attacked us."
Andy reached out to me and reassured me of his anger towards the bandits. "They gave us a lot of problems in the beginning; killed a bunch of our farmhands. We were able to get 'em to stop by making a deal."
Kenny pushed Andy back into his brother. "You knew about these people?"
"Food for protection." Danny told us. "Not like we had much of a choice...but they did stop hasslin' us."
"Man, maybe you were right about this place, Lee." It felt good to hear that from Lilly. It meant she was completely lost in her own little world.
"Maybe it isn't as safe here as we thought." I told everyone. I noticed Carley and Ben were not included in the group of people that came. I hoped they were okay.
"Look, we're sorry." Andy said apologetically. "We've never had 'em screw with us like this. Listen, we may have made an agreement with these people, but we will not stand for this sh**."
"Ain't no way we're letting these sons of bi***es get away with this." Danny's voice was a little unsettling when he was angry.
Kenny spoke with the same tone. "You know where these a**holes are?"
"They're hard to pin down." Danny replied. "But I think I know where at least one of their camps is." He turned to me. "When you're ready to scope it out, come find me." Andy and Danny left to sit on their porch and talk things over, leaving me with Kenny, Lilly, Larry and the kids.
