Chapter 17: Infected
The walker of Mr. Parker grabbed Katjaa's neck and face and pulled it toward his mouth. "Sh**! Katjaa!" I yelled.
I put one hand on the back of the woman's head and the other hand on the walker's face. It took great effort to pry them apart.
The walker let go of Katjaa and my force knocked him to the trunk. I turned around and yelled to Mark, "Throw me the axe!"
The dead man grabbed my shoulder and pulled down toward him. I quickly got up and held him at shoulder length. I bashed his head against the left side of the trunk. It's zombie blood spilled out.
"Move! Move!" Mark said. He came along the side of the truck, lifting the axe behind his head. He took a heavy swing at the walkers head, but missed and drove the axe into the window of the pickup truck. "It's stuck!" Mark yelled.
I threw the walker into the back of the truck, stunning it for a moment. It lurched out at me, knocking me backwards out of the trunk and onto my back. It hobbled out of the car and on top of me. I struggled with it for a minute, but then Carley walked over to me, loaded her gun and shot it at the walker's head.
Carley crouched down by me. "Are you okay?" She asked me. She wiped the walker blood of my face.
I was still hyperventilating from the incident, but I managed to say, "Just...fine..."
"Why'd you bring him here in the first place a**hole?" Larry asked me in his usual angry tone.
Lilly put her hands on her father's chest. "Dad. Calm down."
"You're gonna get us ALL killed!" He started clutching his chest. I was worried the old man was going to have a heart attack.
Kenny finished hugging his traumatized wife and son and turned to Ben, pointing his accusing finger at the boy. "Why didn't you tell us he was bitten?!" Kenny yelled at him.
Ben looked panicked. "What?" He shouted.
"He was bitten," Kenny clenched his teeth. "And you didn't say a da** word!"
"But he wasn't bitten! I swear!" Ben pleaded.
"Well your not bitten friend came back to life and tried to kill my wife!" Kenny gestured towards the dead Mr. Parker.
"What?!!" Ben looked taken aback, and then calmed down again. "Wait, you all don't know?"
"What the hell are you talking about?" Kenny still sounded angry, but slightly less so.
Ben closed his eyes, took a deep breath then raised his hand to tell us something. "...It's not the bite that does it." Ben waited for a response, but when he didn't get one, he continued. "You come back no matter how you die. If you don't destroy the brain that's just what happens. It's gonna happen to ALL of us."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "You're lying..." I spoke to him.
He looked up to me with a sad look on his face. "It's true, I swear it."
Katjaa came out and stood on his side. "Maybe he's right." She said. "I didn't see any bites. That would explain why there's so many of them."
"Da**." Kenny said. "If you just DIE, then one fatal car wreck turns a family of five into a family of walkers."
Ben spoke back up. "I saw people turn who I knew were never bitten. When I first found out, our band was all in the gym. We thought we were finally safe. But one of the girls, Jenny Pitcher I think, she couldn't take it. She took some pills...a lot of them. Someone when in the girl's room the next morning and...da**."
