Chapter 27: The Station Wagon

On the walk home, I lead at the front of the pack. There had been little to no words shared since I left Andy to die.

Carley broke the silence, walking up to me. "Hey, Lee." She said. "I'd say I'm sorry for leaving the motel unattended. But, ya know." She pulled her pink life jacket further up on her shoulders.

"I'm glad you showed up when you did." I told her. "If you hadn't taken that shot at Andy, we might not've made it out of there."

Carley spoke with a frightened tone. "Were they really killing people?...for food?"

"Yeah. They were."

She made a series of disgusted sounds. "That is sick. God...just...gross. Clementine doesn't know, right?"

I glanced back at her. "She's not stupid, Carley."

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small object to hand to me. "Katjaa managed to grab this while she was in the house. She said it was with your stuff."

What she handed me was the video camera I had found in the woods. "Yeah. I found it while I was out in the woods looking for the people who shot Mark. Do you want it?" I extended it back to her.

She looked at it, and then back to me. "Why don't you keep it? Sometimes it helps to have something to document your thoughts on."

I thanked her, then directed my attention to Kenny, who was bent over in pain. His wife and child were trying to help his wound. I'm sure they were just glad he was alive. "How are you doing?" Katjaa asked.

"I'll be fine. I'm just...not as young as I used to be." Kenny looked to Duck and laughed. I started walking over to him, and Kenny noticed. "Hon, you go on ahead and give me and Lee a second."

Katjaa and Duck walked away from us. Kenny, still clutching his side turned his eyes to me. "There's gonna be fallout." He said.

I paused a moment before speaking. "For killing Lilly's dad? Yeah, I imagine so."

"What do you think?" He asked me.

I took a second to think about it. "You murdered Larry."

He didn't take to my words kindly. "F*** you, man. You're alive because of me. Why didn't you have my back?"

"I saved your wife and kid." I argued.

"No, I saved them! By making sure Larry didn't kill US."

I thought about his statement, but eventually decided it didn't need an answer. "I couldn't do it, Ken."

"Well." He looked down and to the left. "Maybe we should stay out of each other's way for a while." He simply walked away from me, leaving me behind.

Clementine approached me to fill in Kenny's spot. "Come on, Clementine." I said. "Stay close."

"Lee..." She said. "Are those bad people dead?"

I figured she already knew the truth on the inside. "Yes. Walkers probably got 'em. They were very bad people, and were punished for it."

She accepted my answer. "Okay."

I heard Duck's voice from up ahead. "Hey dad...what's that noise?"

Kenny held his free hand to his ear and I did as well. I could hear the buzzing of a car engine. "Sounds like a car." Kenny said.

"Oh God." Ben complained. "Not more strangers!"

I walked over to where Kenny was. He looked to his left with an expression of anger, but then it cooled over. I knew Kenny and I were still best friends at heart.
