There are some moments in life that are so traumatising they leave a carbon footprint in your mind. As I sat at the funeral for Allen Winter the Winner, I knew this was one of those moments. Grief, loss and despair filled me up and I truly felt there was nothing I could do. Over the past month I experimented with illicit substances in ways I never thought I would experience. I planned daily over how to get Nicole Van Oscar to like me and agonized the outcome.
I failed statistics a second time in a row and had to face reality that I would be going back for another semester. But most importantly I tried so hard to get a gym instructor job and was devastated when I didn't get it.
Allen Winter had just started his new career as a bartender in the city. He finally had some motivation to do something with his life. Now he was dead. Was that all meaningless? If this was some kind of stage play then this outcome felt like a tragedy.
Allen Winter was a born Winner who had so much potential. Yet now he was dead. King George and Lun sat next to me, both in great pain. They were both lamenting at how they treated him before he was killed. The Daniels, Gaz and Tubb sat opposite us and looked like they had not slept at all. Tony Cars sat behind us with a hoodie over his face.
However the person who took his death the hardest was Goldfish. Who actually got up and did a speech to honour Allen Winter as a true winner. The speech was flawless and filled with positive stories that Goldfish knew about his close friend. After the funeral was finished we all went to Allen's house to attend his wake.
The wake was filled with family but we all chose to sit outside.
"To Allen" Goldfish said as we all took a shot of Sambuca.
"How did this happen?" Gaz said as we all wondered the same thing.
"Wrong place, wrong time. The truck driver just lost control and smashed into his car. Allen did nothing wrong" Lun said as we all stared in disbelief.
"It's the series of events that took place that day. If only he was a few minutes late he would still be alive. It was inevitable..." Tony Cars said.
I was in a bad place as it was. Yes Lara had cheered me up but this incident just brought me right back down to rock bottom. It's as if as soon as I heard that phone call all the negative things that happened to me hit me at full force. Like a horde of stampeding rhinos trampling over a deer.
I actually don't want to spend too much time talking about this event. It still depresses me when I have to think about this. So long story short we all got drunk that night and tried to make the alcohol take away our pain. Unfortunately we all ended up with hangovers and no idea what happened.
