"Alright now just put this gown on and Dr. Moore will be right with you." I handed the lady her hospital gown before leaving the room.
I've been aiding to Shauna for a week now and I honestly loved it. It was amazing how welcome she made all the patients feel. I definitely was learning a lot from her.
I walked towards her desk as she was typing away on the computer.
"We don't have anyone else right now so I guess we can just chill?" She offered. I nodded, pulling up a chair and sitting next to her.
"Any plans this weekend?" She asked smiling at me.
"Oh no. Just the usual for me. Studying." I answered honestly.
"That doesn't ever get boring?"
"Not really. I enjoy learning new things and challenging myself."
"Well that's good." Shauna smiled as our department head came over.
"Shauna we got one in room 507. Abdominal pain and mild asthma. Do a regular examine." She handed Shauna the patient's information in a small folder and Shauna nodded, standing up. We both put on fresh gloves and I followed behind her.
Once walking into the room, I stood in the corner, doing my usual job of observing until I was needed.
The man sat with his back facing the door. He was on the edge of the bed and his head was down. I watched as Shauna read through his papers.
"Hello Mr. Alsina, how are you doing today?" She smiled, walking closer to him. He cleared his throat a little but never lifted his head.
"Fine."
"It says here you're having some abdominal pain?"
He nodded slightly, playing with his fingers.
"Yeah."
"You wanna talk to me a little about that?" Shauna sat down in a chair and rolled it a little closer to him.
"Hurts ta' breathe." He said simply.
I immediately noticed how stand offish he was and paid close attention to how Shauna would respond. She studied him closely but ofcourse he had no idea because his head was still down.
"It also says you have mild asthma, have you been keeping it under control?"
He nodded again and she smiled lightly. "Great. Well I'm just gonna give you a regular exam. If you don't mind sitting up straight for me?" He did as told and she grabbed her stethoscope.
"Go ahead and lift your shirt for me." He lifted it and she placed it against his chest. She told him to take deep breathes as she moved it around. She asked him if it hurt and he nodded, wincing a little each time. Once done, she flashed a light over both of his eyes and checked his tongue.
"Next I'm going to need you to change into this gown and pee into this cup. This will tell us that everything inside your body is going good." She handed him the gown and the cup and he nodded as she walked towards the door. I followed her out and we walked back over to her desk.
"That guy is a quiet one." She said, sitting back in her chair.
"Yeah. Hope everything is okay with him." I said, finally sitting down as well.
"Milan can I ask you something?" She sat up a little. The look on her face warned me that this was about to get a little more serious.
"Sure."
