The Hero Falls

'The Hero' stood facing the mirror. It was going to be another long day, another long meeting, another day full of comments about how fat he was. He wasn't that fat really... was he?

Yes... yes you are, and everyone knows it. Why else do you think that they laugh at you?

Fatass. Wasn't that what they called him? Or was that just Arthur, he'd lost track of how many people had called him fat over the past week. He laughed it off, sure. Every time, he laughed it off, but there were only so many times he could laugh and it couldn't hurt him. Was there really any point in getting up today? Probably not.

Quickly, he got dressed and went downstairs.

8:30

He was going to be late. He was always late. He ran into the kitchen to throw some toast in the toaster and froze.

Fat, stupid, worthless

Maybe... maybe he could pass on breakfast this morning. He'd have some lunch later on, a snack maybe. Breakfast wasn't really that important anyway.

Alfred swiped his keys off the table, grabbed his briefcase and jumped into his car. Within minute, he was standing outside the meeting room, only ten minutes late today. He could hear them talking inside. They'd started without him?

Well of course they have. No one wants to listen to you and your stupid ideas

He burst through the door and all talking ceased.

"Don't worry guys, the Hero is here to save the day."

"Late as usual. Just sit down" Arthur grumbled. "And just for the record, we were doing much better before you showed up."

"That hurts dude" he grinned, not mentioning that it really did hurt.

"Just shut up" Arthur groaned, rolling his eyes and turning back to Ludwig, who looked like he was going to blow.

"I..."

"Alfred vould you just shut up and sit down so zat we can start this meeting properly" Ludwig bellowed, slamming his hands down onto the desk.

Alfred sank into a seat next to his twin, Mathew.

Honestly, you can't do anything right can you? Pathetic

He shrugged the voice off and started to listen. The meeting was boring as usual, and he was hungry. So hungry. His stomach rumbled.

"How many burgers have you already eaten?" Arthur snapped. "You've probably already eaten all of MacDonald's, and you're still hungry?"

"Typical America" Francis sighed. "What a Fatass"

He said it quietly, but Alfred still heard. And it stung. He brushed it off, pretended he didn't hear it. It was what he did every day anyway. Sighing, he placed his head on the table. It was so boring the meeting, and lately, he hadn't been picked at all for expressing his own ideas. That just made it more boring, or if he was, someone would shout at him to 'sit down, we don't need to hear about your superheroes'. Was that all they saw him as? Someone who liked heroes? Someone who liked to dream about stuff like that? Someone who was... fat?

"America, could you at least pretend you're paying attention?" Germany snapped, slapping his stick down on the table in front of him, making him jump.

"You'd have thought with the amount of burgers you eat you wouldn't be strong enough to lift yourself that high off the seat" Francis laughed.

Maybe it was time to call it quits.

Germany sighed and waved his hand. "Lunch break."

"Are you alright?" Mathew asked him as he stood up to leave "You've been acting kind of... well... down today."
