Björg frowned at her tilt meter. The ground was uneven in way too many places for her to feel comfortable.

"Hey Tómas? Come look at this" she shouted over her shoulder to her volcanologist partner. "The Tilt Meter has funny readings."

Tómas frowned from where he was pouring over an electronic spider and came over. "That's... that's not good."

"Do you think it's going to blow?" she turned to look at him, completely serious.

He didn't say anything, just showed her the readings from the electronic spider. Her face paled. "We need to get out of here now."

The ground rumbled a little as they shoved a few things into bags. It shook again, the cabin they were in trembling. Then, there was a huge bang and they were both thrown off their feet as the world went dark.

Copenhagen

"Alright guys, let's get this meeting going" Mathias shouted, waving a bottle of beer in the air and flopping down in his chair. "I vote Norge goes first."

"I vote you stop being annoying as hell before I do something you'll regret" Lukas hissed.

"How will I regret it if you do it?" Mathias frowned.

"Because I don't care what happens to you, or what I do to you as long as you shut up" Lukas snapped.

"Someone's grouchy" Mathias laughed, throwing himself back up from his chair and standing at the front of the room again. "Okay so, you know how it's the World Cup in exactly eighty three days... not like I'm counting or anything but..."

Lukas was suddenly aware of Emil next to him going tense. He zoned out of the Dane's boring speech and turned to his little brother who was gripping the edge of his chair so tightly his knuckles were white and the skin underneath his nails was bleeding in a couple of places.

"Emil?" he gently put a hand onto his shoulder. Emil didn't acknowledge it but let go of the chair so he could see how much he was shaking. "What's going on?"

"Eyjaf" Emil spluttered. "Eyjaf."

"Crap" Lukas said.

"Hey guys, is no one listening to my speech?" Mathias rolled his eyes. "Seriously you two."

"I'm listening" Tino piped up. Berwald grunted.

"Well at the moment, there are more important things" Lukas snapped, turning back to Emil who was gripping the chair again, but was still visibly shaking.

"What's wrong with him?" Mathias asked, noticing the problem.

Shakily, Emil raised a hand to his mouth and coughed. A handful of ash piled in his hand, growing every time he coughed. "It's..." His hand started smoking, the one with the ash in, and he stood up suddenly, shoving the chair back. "I... I..." Then he collapsed, still shaking on the ground in fits and opening and closing his mouth as though gasping for air.

"Oh God" Tino leapt up and ran over. "Lukas? What's happening?"

"It's the volcano." Mathias stared at Lukas in horror.

"The volcano? Which one? I swear there's more than America, Italy and Canada put tog..."

"Eyjafjallajokull" Lukas said.

Mathias paled for a second and then sighed. "That's alright though isn't it? They're usually pretty safe and... and... harmless right?"

Lukas nodded. "Usually, but he never reacts like this. It's be minor shaking, maybe getting really angry at someone, anything like that. Never this bad."

"So... you're saying it's big?" Berwald asked, coming up behind them. Lukas nodded again.

Emil choked on something and suddenly went completely still. Lukas swallowed and leaned over to shake him gently. "Hey, Emil. Wake up brother." Emil didn't move.

"Crap" Mathias pulled out his phone and went to speed dial. "Hey is this the hospital? Yeah? Yeah, yeah whatever listen, we have an emergency on our hands here and... I don't bloody care, I'm the personification of Denmark. Yes I know you didn't know. Look, there is a problem with Iceland. The personification I mean and... yes thank you." He ended the call and sighed exasperatedly. Normally, he'd have laughed and made some remark about emergencies or something, but this time, he pocketed his phone and started chewing at a hanging thumbnail. "Um... it should be hear in a minute."

Lukas nodded and turned back to Emil. His eyes had filled with water, making it hard to see certain things, but he could just make out the form of his brother, so picked up his hand and gently started to stroke it. He blinked and a couple of tears trailed down his cheeks.

"It'll be okay Norge" Mathias said, crouching down next to him. "He'll he fine." He hesitated. "Will you hit me if I hug you?"

Lukas shook his head and Mathias wrapped his arms around him. "As I say, you can trust me for once. He'll be fine."

The ambulance arrived a few minutes later, Lukas getting into the back still clutching Emil's hand. He only let go of it when they arrived at the hospital and he was rushed away. Normally, he wouldn't trust Mathias, but this time, he really wanted to. He really wanted to know Emil was going to be okay. In the corner of the waiting room was an old television which he flicked on, scrolling through the channels.

'Eyjafjallajokul, an Icelandic volcano, has erupted, creating the highest level of air travel disruption since the Second World War" the news reporter stacked her papers together a little and glanced down at them, almost sensing Lukas' nervousness.  "It is estimated that the ash put into the atmosphere will affect millions of people's lives in the Northern Hemisphere and some scientists are already saying the eruption will carry on for longer than just a couple of days."

Lukas flicked the television off. He didn't want to hear anymore about his little brother's country. What ever it was, it had hurt him, and he wouldn't be better until it was all over.

The eruption of Eyjafjallajokul lasted from the 10th March when it erupted to the 23rd June, stranded over 20 million passengers when 95,000 flights had to be cancelled. However, no one actually died, people having been evacuated a while before.
