"We didn't know we were making memories, all we knew was that we were having fun" Unknown

August 20, 2012Me and Vanessa have been seating on her dining table for the past hour trying to figure out a time to hang out on her busy schedule. We didn't have a problem last year or the years before, but now we do. She will be attending Uni this year and I'm still in high school, a senior, which means we have to figure out a method to still be in each others lives.
She was wearing a black and white striped shirt and blue jeans with her converse, while I was wearing a pink blouse and white jeans with my flats. We both had our hair up, Vane's hair is in a messy bun , mine is in a high pony-tail.
We are so different, in style, in attitude, in likes and dislikes, but somehow we complement each other. It feels like just yesterday we met and became instant friends, but that was ages ago. That late afternoon happened 11 years ago, outside of this apartment.

"¿Porque no vas y hablas con ella?" My aunt suggest. (Why don't you go over and speak to her?)"Por que no sé si habla español." I respond looking up at her. (Because I don't know if she speaks Spanish)
"Yo conozco a su mamá, ella habla español. No te preocupes. Necesitas hacer amigas aquí par que no te sientas sola." "Está bien." I say while I walk down the stairs towards the blonde girl outside her apartment door.( I know her mom, and she speaks Spanish. Don't worry. You need to start making friends so you won't be so alone.) ( okay )
When I get there she is on her doorstep playing alone.
"Hola, me llamo Mía. ¿Y tú?" I trying to sound as normal as possible, but I wasn't successful. "Vanessa. ¿Cuantos años tienes? Yo tengo 7." She responds with a smile. (Hello, my names is Mia. What's your name?) (Vanessa. How old are you? I'm 7.)
"Voy a cumplir 7 en diciembre 4." (I'm going to turn 7 on December 4th)
"Yo voy a cumplir años en diciembre 3. Que chido." She said happily. (My birthday is December 3rd. How cool is that)
"¿Quieres ser mi amiga?" ( want to be my friend?)

I was brought back to reality when Vanessa's mom comes in."¿Quieren algo de comer?" (Want something to eat?)
"No gracias." (No thank you) "Yes." We answer at the same time.
"Si (yes)mom. You have to eat. When was the last time you ate? Did you even eat breakfast?" Vanessa tells me in her 'explain yourself voice'.
"Umm. This morning? Wait. Never mind. Last night. I'm not hungry." I give her my best fake smile I got.
The truth is that I rarely eat, when I'm at Vanessa's I tell her that I ate before going over, when I'm home I say that I ate at Vanessa's. I have also stopped eating red meat, so Vanessa is making sure I at least eat chicken when I'm at her house.
"I can't believe you." She says in disbelief, while shaking her head.
"So have you talked to my cousin." I say, trying to change the subject. "I miss all of us hanging out, like the old times."
"Me too." She says with a smile on her face.
"But we changed. All of us. Especially when Tori left Cali." I say with a sad smile.
Tori is a friend of ours that moved two years ago to Mississippi with her parents. She was the life of the party, we were always in a good mood when we were all together.
Back then it was, Vanessa, her brother,Alex, Tory, Alissa, and my cousin, Max, and me. We had the best summers, we never felt alone or in need of social cliques. We were all different but we loved each other just that way.
Vanessa was the quite one, she laughed at the jokes and pranks, but was never apart of them. She was very quirky. She was always dressed with jeans and a t-shirt that had her new idol printed in the front. Her eyes were the color of the ocean, so bright. Her skin was a soft beige with a hint of pink and her hair was a beautiful gold color.
Alex was the one helping Tori with the pranks, he was also the life of the party. With his boyish hair and baby face, no one would think he was sometimes the mastermind behind our little adventures. He would always dress like a nerd, but that didn't stop girls from going after him. I mean who wouldn't? He looked beautiful with his blue eyes and gold hair, just like his sister, they looked like twins, almost. His eyes were the same color as Vanessa's, but his were much darker, more intense.
Alissa was the childish one, she laughed at everything and that's when we would get in trouble. She was so innocent and beautiful, it was a surprise to us that she never notices that guys were into her, they liked her playfulness, her innocence. She would always wear shorts and a t-shirt, she knew how to dress for Cali weather. Her hair was so long and black, and her skin was soft and olive, she always looked perfect.
Max was and for ever more be the playboy, he had the looks, and the attitude. He liked getting into trouble, but he never got caught. His looks where envied by many, he had dark black hair and dark eyes, many of my friends said they could just get lost in them, and many did. He dressed like a badboy, leather jacket and blue jeans.
Tori was the 'glue' on the group, we were boring kids if it weren't for her. She made anyone laugh and have fun. She was very beautiful and hot, no guy could ever say other wise, she wasn't afraid to dress provocative. Her hair was always in a bun, her skin was dark and soft. She was envied by many, including me.
Then, there's me, Mia, I followed their lead but I was always scared. I was nothing like them and everything like them, I was quite but 'under the influence' of sugar i was practically jumping on walls, I didn't like the pranks but I participated in them, I sometimes wouldn't find it funny but when I did I would laugh so hard we would get caught, I had that innocent look but yet I craved for danger and no one would ever blame me for I had mastered the 'look', but one thing I never was and will never be is ' the life of the party'. I wasn't beautiful, I was plain Jane and I knew that know one took a second glance at me. I had dark brown hair and light olive skin, with plain dull eyes.
Vanessa brings me back to the conversation when she clears her throat.
"Max needs to get back on track or he won't be graduating next year. His looks won't give him a career." I grin on the last part. "It will only get him into your bed." I state with a smirk.
Vane and Max had a thing going on. They never said that they liked each other more than friends but the look they gave each other said otherwise. They were each other's first everything, but they would never make it public. They thought that no one knew, but we ALL knew.
"Ew no. Friends shouldn't hook up with other friends. Most of all if you have know them since for ever." She gives me a disgusted look. I know it's fake, but her words still hit me like a brick.
Right when I'm about to say something Vanessa's mom comes in.
"Ya está la comida." (Food is ready)
" I'm gunna go wash up." I tell Vanessa as I get up from the chair and I walk to the room she shares with her brother, that room has a bathroom.
