Kate knocked and entered with a gentle smile hoping and wishing that Cordelia would be attentive. When she fully opened the door she saw that Cordelia was in deed awake with a nurse handing her pills to swallow. She did swallow them and for a moment locked eyes with me.
"Can you give us a minute." Kate kindly asked the nurse. She nodded and left rather quickly.
"Hello Cordelia," Kate said pulling up and chair and sitting by the bed, "do you know who I am?"
"You look rather familiar, you remind me of a friend I had." Cordelia replied.
"That's not what I mean really, but do you remember me from just recently?"
"We're you the one that saved me?"
"Yes."
Tears formed in Cordelia's eyes and she hesitantly sat up. Kate knew what was happening and stood as well and the two hugged. Kate heard a slight whimper escape Cordelia's mouth of gratefulness, "thank you so much, thank you, thank you , thank you." They pulled back and sat back down.
"I'm just happy you're safe." Beckett said placing a stray piece of hair behind her ear.
"I do know who you are Kate."
The change in the mood caused Kate's face to go blank, serious.
"I never told you my name."
"But I know who you are. In the orphanage, there is this girl, or was, she's my age, she was, her name was Joelle, but everyone called her JoJo, I swear that the two of you were so similar looking...
Silence...
...except her eyes...her eyes were crystal blue, and she even moved like you. She loved you. She was your daughter."
Kate wasn't trying to hide her tears that were making themselves known. She knew that this time would eventually come but she never thought how soon it actually would.
"What was she like?" Was all Kate managed to say.
"She was amazing. She was so kind, and caring. She kept her feelings all bundled together and didn't want to harm anyone; always trying to do her best, never wanting to stop someone from being themselves. Us kids would get- get newspapers for when we made paper mache and she saw 'Detective Katherine Beckett is back and active as a Detective after being released from local NY hospital' and she automatically knew that you were her mother."
"Was she upset?"
"No, of course not. She knew that you putting her up for adoption was the best choice for her future. Of course she was curious why but she did it out of love. She was never upset and she never resented you for anything. Of course she wondered who her father was and wanted to know the story but she never bothered to dig to deep afraid of coming up empty."
"Can I see her?"
"She's dead."
Kate laid her head into her arms up against the side of Cordelia's bed and cried her heart out. Her daughter was dead. Kate's parents convinced her to give up the child because of the way she got pregnant. She regretted that moment from the moment from the second she decided it.
"H-how?" Was all she could muster to say.
"She was hit by a car. She was- well we were running away from some creep. It was on our way home from school, and we decided to walk that day because it was so nice outside, and she- she was slacking behind because she had sprained her ankle a few days back. And- and I crossed first and then the light turned red. But we were so scared and then she came running just a few seconds after me and she was-she- she was to late. The car came, the creep left, and the car left. I ran back and saw her there lying in a pool of her own blood crying out, screaming out. And- and -" Cordelia couldn't find the words to finish. Kate's tears formed a pool on the sheets under her eyes. She looked up her mascara running.
"I'm an awful person."
"No you're not Kate."
"Delia,was her last name Beckett?"
"Yes."
"And miss Robichaux new, why didn't she say anything?"
"I don't know, but she probably had a reasons."
"Do you have a picture of her?"
Cordelia nodded and grabbed her phone, she didn't even need to unlock it. The pair of friends were her screensaver. When Kate saw this she was speechless, emotionless, stunned. Unprepared for the breakdown building up inside. She didn't react to the picture, she held it all inside. Cordelia placed the phone back down on she table and laid a hand on Beckett's shoulder. They locked eyes once more and Kate decided to ask a few more questions.
"Do you want to know the real reason?" She asked.
"We both wanted to know but if your uncomfortable then you don't have to."
"No, you deserve to know, you probably spent every second together. Yore the next best thing."
"Ok."
"I was drunk, young, and heartbroken. The normal sad life story. I got hella drunk and met a man who helped me home. I let him come inside and then- then I kissed him and in just increase from there. You probably know what happens next. And- then the next morning- he- he was gone and I me what I had done. I did t even remember what he looked like only his eyes. They were blue, one of the bluest blues I have ever seen. So vibrant, they were luminous. I couldn't just abort my child. But my parents said that I was nowhere near ready to be a mother. So once she was born I put her up for adoption. And that was the end of it, until now. That's the whole story. I still don't remember all of it."
"I understand, and so would Jo, she would love you even more."
"I hope so."
"You know you really would've been the perfect mother."
Kate and Delia both let out a slight laugh when a voice shocked them both.
"Kate?" A voice as small as a whisper made itself known. The worried person behind the voice was no other than Rick.
