3 months later...
Rick is still missing and Kate has just reached 9 months. Everyone is excited for her, but be distraction isn't fooling her. Her favorite person and the one she loves most in this world has been gone for over 3 months. And despite her hours of devotion to his case, she and the boys have gotten nowhere. Every night she has nightmares about Rick dying and her being responsible. Really she is, she thought. If she hadn't pestered him he wouldn't have told her about the letter and he would still be here. He would be in her arms right now. And he would probably be making some joke or talking to their child. What if he wasn't there when their child was born? What then? And Jerry just couldn't seem to leave her alone. She kept receiving threatening letters from Tyson saying how she is not to tell anyone of this. Which is why whenever her or the boys figure out a new lead, they meet at the park. Martha and Alexis have decided that worrying about Rick is not doing them any good, so they are going away to the Hamptons for awhile to get away from everything. Alexis has started calling Kate mom ever since Rick left. She thought that if Her dad was gone Kate and Grams were the next best thing. And they were. Kate was overjoyed at first when she heard the words form, but was saddened when she realized that Alexis had no hope of her father coming back.
With Alexis being 19 and her father still missing, it reminded Kate of herself when her mother died. She intended to do everything in her power to try and make Alexis feel ok, if Rick died, she would not want Alexis to go down the same path, the same dark path, that Kate chose.
Martha had left the loft to go buy some groceries for when they left for the Hamptons. They would be leaving in a week, which meant Alexis would go to school for this week and then take more time off. So at the loft it was just Kate and Alexis. Kate was sitting on the couch thinking about her and Castles child which was supposed to be born on May 12th but it's May 16th (I don't remember if I put the actually due date in here, and if I did I can't find it so I picked another one)
Alexis slowly made her way downstairs and sat down next to Kate.
"Hey Ka- I mean mom." She stuttered. Kate sighed and grabbed Alexis' hand.
"Listen sweetie, if you don't want to call me mom you don't have to."
"But I do want to, it's just I'm finally starting to realize that my dad is never coming back." She replied and her eyes became glossy.
"I'm worried to," Kate said bringing Alexis closer to her, "but we can't stress over this. I am so scared when I fall asleep, that when I wake up I'll be getting a call that they found him dead. And that makes me terrified. But I can't worry about it because we are doing everything we possibly can to try and bring him home. Alive."
Alexis just cried into her 'mom' and Kate gently rubbed her hand up and down her back slowly shushing her. Soon Alexis calmed down and looked up at Kate.
"I'm so sorry I was mean to you."
"Honey when were you mean to me?"
"When you and dad were asleep in bed that one time when I first saw you in my house. I was so awful to you, and you had just gotten home from the hospital. How can you not hate me?"
"Alexis, I could never hate you. You live your dad very much and your protective over him. What was your first instinct when you saw us."
"That you had slept together."
"Right, and you didn't want me to hurt your dad, so you protected him by defending him. And there is nothing wrong with that. I promise you."
"But why didn't you ever get even?"
"Because, getting even gets you no where. It may feel great at the time, but in time you'll either feel guilty or regret it, most likely both."
"But-"
"Alexis stop trying to understand everything. You are an amazing you woman, and you want to know the who, what, where, when, and why's down to the very core. But sometimes there's just no explanation. And believe me when I say I don't hate you. I love you. Your an amazing person sweetie."
"I love you too Kate."
"Have fun at college. I know you think it's going to be hard because you'll still miss your father, but I will text you every afternoon and night, letting you know everything we found or didn't find. Ok?"
"Ok. Thank you for everything mom."
"Your very welcome Alexis."
"I can't wait to meet my little brother or sister."
"I can't wait either."
They smiled and laughed and talked for the rest of the day, before Alexis had to go back to college. And that night Kate thought. I she brought her computer to the precinct, and secretly brought Tori in on the case, of course with Ryan and Espo, they could get a location. Each would take turns one the laptop only bring up the video and letters while the others would pretend to follow up on a different lead. And if Tyson was watching it would look lien they were working on something totally different. And once Tori had discovered a location they could go and save Castle.
This could work.
That night Kate had texted everyone needing to be involved and made sure they knew what parts of the plan they were associated with. And once everyone was up to date, she had a decent nights sleep for once in what seemed like forever, but was really just ever since her and Rick had last slept in the same bed.
