Chapter 30: Rough Times

"Let's get married?" Kate said sitting up in bed and staring at Rick's like he just grew a second head.

"Yeah," he stated, "let's get married. I need you with me, I need to know that you'll be with me forever. I can't imagine my life without you."

Kate looked down contemplating the outcomes of each of her choices. She didn't even need to think over the cons because she already knew her answer.

"Of course I'll marry you. Is that even a question!" She hugged Rick and then the two kissed passionately. They fell asleep happy for the first time in weeks.

Rick was the first to wake and he did his best not to wake Kate. He made sure that she was still sound asleep and then got out of bed. He put on his robe and then made her a good breakfast. He prepared her eggs and toast and fresh orange juice. Placed it all on a tray and placed a single a single rose in his mouth. He would go out later today and pick out a ring for Kate. When he walked in he saw that she was partly uncovered. He set the tray down and covered his lovely fiancé back up. She stirred and her eyes fluttered beneath her lids. She was probably dreaming.

Rick then quietly walked into the bathroom and started to brush his teeth. He was spitting out the tooth paste when he heard a scream. It was Kate. He quickly ran out and saw her tossing and turning. He kneeled by the bed and tried to calm her down.

"Kate, you have to wake up!" He called out to her.

She wasn't waking up and was becoming more violent. She began swatting at Rick. She struck him in the jaw and he scooted back. When he did Kate rolled off the bed. Her hand hit the tray of food and flew off. When she hit the ground, she woke up from the thud, gaining another from the eggs and toast and orange juice landing on her head.

She was definitely scared and covered her head once the tray fell off. She slowly looked up wondering what the hell was going on and why was Rick was holding his jaw.

"What did I do?" Kate asked, "Are you ok?" She brushed the egg off her head and crawled over removing his hand and seeing a forming bruise.

"Oh my God! Did I do that?" She then looked behind her and saw the mess she made, "I am so sorry." She began to cry.

"No, no, don't cry, your ok," He removed his hand and crawled over and hugged her, "what happened in your dream?"

"I was with Cole, and he was beating me, and- and it was just so awful. He said he killed you and he said that I was the one who was responsible." She buried herself into his chest and he just hugged her tighter.

"I made you breakfast."

Kate giggled, and kissed his jaw.

"I was getting ready to go to go get you a ri- I mean to go pick up your keys from the hospital."

"Can I go to?"

"I don't think you should. You're very fragile right now and you really need some rest and some alone time to just breathe. In a few days I'll take you to see her. I promise."

"Ok."

"Now I'm going to go finish getting dressed while you go take a shower."

"Will you take one with me?"

"I already took one baby."

"Ok, but what about the mess?"

"I'll clean it up later."

"What if I do it?"

"If it'll get your mind of things then sure."

"You're the best, Castle."

"I know." The two lovebirds kissed and then Rick helped Kate up. She got into the shower and Rick left soon after.

He decided to go to the hospital first. When he got there he saw Cordelia just staring at the ceiling. He knocked and she looked at him knowing who he was.

"Hello Cordelia," castle said with a bright smile.

"Hi Mr. Castle." Cordelia replied with a hoarse voice.

"How are you?"

"I've been better. But I've been waiting to ask you- How's Kate? Did you guys break up?"

"Actually- were engaged."

"Really?! That's amazing! I'm so happy for the two of you."

"Yeah I came to get her keys she said she left them here."

"Of course, they're over there." Rick leaned over and grabbed them, placing them in his jacket pocket.

"Well I've got to get going, I'm going to go pick out her ring."

"Oh that's so exci- ow!"

"What?" Castle asked. Cordelia fell over the side of the bed and threw up blood. She then started to have a severe seizure.

Rick screamed for help and nurse and doctors came piling in. They pushed Rick outside and he watched through the glass. The doctors were working viciously. And all of a sudden everything stopped. Cordelia was still and everyone stood shocked. Then she flatlined. Rick turned his back to the glass and prayed for her. Soon he heard the door open and close. He quickly looked over at the sulking Doctor.

"I'm very sorry-" the doctor didn't even need to finish Rick knew. He thanked the doctor and almost ran to his car. He was worried. What was he going to tell Kate? She was basically taking Cordelia as her own child. This could not get any worse. He'll try and take his mind off things by picking out a ring for Kate. He'll tell her about Cordelia tonight.

Kate stepped out of the shower and quickly got dressed. She was wearing some shorts and a tank top. Because her hair was still wet she put it in a lose ponytail behind her head. She then walked out and into the bedroom, she stared at the ground and went to go get the cleaning products for cleaning up the mess she made.

She walked into the kitchen and kneeled down opening the bottom cabinet drawers looking for supplies. Kate heard the door open and closed and was excited that Rick was back, only she wondered why he was back so early. She grabbed a few supplies and stood up ready to greet her fiancé. But when she stood up she did not see Rick, she saw a complete stranger walking towards her with a gun.
