I counted the time he had left.
Six fifty nine...
My watch read.
10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...2...
Soichero sat down at the table.
"You made it in time."
I said in a bored tone.
"What do you want?"
He snapped.
I raised one of my eyebrows.
"What do you want?"
He leaned in and whispered.
"How did you get those police files."
I thought for a moment.
"How did you find me?"
He sighed.
"I have my ways. Now spill it. How could you even hack into that and why?" A waitress came and we both ordered coffee.
"For money." The waitress came back with our coffee and left.
"Why on earth would you need-"
I cut him off.
"Food, water,shelter..."
I trailed off.
"Personal reasons..."
"Like what?"
My voice grew quieter.
"Personal reasons. Not your business."
I could tell he was getting impatient with me.
"A kid your age shouldn't be drinking coffee." I sighed and put my cup down.
"Doesn't matter."
He glared at me and I glared back.
"Where are your parents?"
I took my cup again and realized it was empty so I set it back down.
"Ever since I could remember...dead..." I mumbled. The waitress came back to refill my coffee. Soichero barely touched his.

"Then go to an orphanage."
I threw him a disgusted look.
"You don't know me."
He mumbled something and spoke clearly.
"What do you mean?"
I took another sip of my coffee and sunk into my seat.
"I'm an outcast...a misfit, a castaway.
I don't mix well with others."
I thought of L and slightly grimaced.
"Why are you so stubborn?"
He asked.
I looked down into my coffee and stared at my reflection.
"I used to be different..."
"What changed?"
I nearly spit out my coffee.
"Personal issues."
He leaned back.
"You don't open up to people do you?"
I froze.
Those were L's exact words.
Tears welled in my eyes but quickly vanished. Soichero saw.
"Are you ok?"
I was staring into my coffee slightly shaking.
His eyes widened.
"Are you ok?" He said a little louder.
"I'm fine." I said coldly. I stopped shaking. He was still staring at me.

"How long have you've been in Japan?"
"I used to live in England...I came to Japan a few years ago when a man helped me escape..." I said quietly.
"You may be a thief but I pity you. I could of never done that by myself as a kid." I slumped over.
"You'll get used to bad stuff happening to you. Ever since I could remember I've been bad luck charm." I sighed again.
"Hopefully I'll change." We were both silent.

"I don't care what has happened right now. You're in big trouble." I rolled my eyes.
"You've went against the law. We could do anything we want to you. You're a minor with no guardians, surely we could find a way. But there is something else you could do." My ears perked up. "What is it?" He stared at me hesitating to speak. "What is it?" I said impatiently.
"If you have the skills...you could hack into some of the criminals computers.
I know others could but this may be your chance to redeem yourself.
Don't think of me as your enemy but don't think of me as your friend."

I nodded. "I'll do it." I finished my coffee and rested my chin on the table.
He stared at me.
"You ok?"
"Just tired..." I mumbled.

The waiter came back and he paid.
He spoke when she left. "You don't need to pay me back."
"Thanks..." I mumbled again. He stood up.
"You go home and I'll text you the information." I nodded and stood up. I rubbed my sore eyes and we parted.
Time skip
All I remembered was trudging myself back in the house and I had passed out on the couch.
Hours passed and I was awoken by my phone buzzing. I quickly answered it.
Before I knew it I was on my computer for hours. If this was my so called chance to redeem myself then I'd take it. I was up till the sun rose and my phone had buzzed again.
I heard Soichero's voice.
"You're off the hook. You got lucky."
He said in an angered tone.
I sighed of relief and fell back asleep.
The feeling of remorse laid over me yet I forgot why. The burning sensation in my eyes hadn't gone.
The next morning I walked over to the mirror. I dropped the cup of coffee in my hand and gasped.
My eyes were blood red.
I screamed and jumped back. Moments after I drew closer and gaped at my reflection.
No...how is this possible...
I heard laughing and Ryuk appeared behind me.
"Already happening is it?" I screamed again and punched the mirror.
"WHATS HAPPENING TO ME!"
I screamed to Ryuk.
"You'll find out soon enough." He chuckled. Then he flew away.
