Chapter 3

It’s been over a week since the attack. It’s been over a week since anyone has seen or heard from McKayla. I received the news her parents didn’t make it through the attack. I can only hope she’s with them. Even after Alex’s death she came back to her children the next night to comfort them. Alexis and Michael are taking their grandparents’ death hard. I at least thought she would have come around to them by now. My witch Edna was found unharmed right after the attack, I have been having her calling out to McKayla since then. Even if she was throwing and whipping things around the room, I would at least know she was okay. At this point I would take her even if she was destroying the castle. I needed to hear from her.

My kingdom took a big loss. Half my men were killed, most of the humans were killed and a little under half of the wolves were killed. The castle is almost rebuilt. The windows have been replaced and the vents recovered. Now it’s just the decor that is being replaced.

Michael is no longer showing fear, instead he’s too overconfident for a fledgling, I have had to pin him a few times to put him back into his place. However, Alexis is still traumatized from the attack. She is constantly looking over her shoulder and up above. I have even had to bit her a few times just to calm her down. She has her mother’s overactive imagination. For the first time in years, I find her sneaking into my room, fearfully closing the blinds, due to her childhood nightmares of the sun, that I only managed to make worse, and then crawling into my bed.

I will never forget the first time she crawled into bed with me, she was six years old. She had a nightmare and woke up she yelling for her dad. Jennifer’s first thought was Alex, until Alexis started frantically pointing at my room. Her panicked screaming for her dad, woke me. I rushed to see what was wrong and as soon as I unlocked the door and opened it, she ran past me, and jumped into my bed. She curled up into a tight little ball under the covers trembling in fear. When I sat down next to her, her trembling stopped, I sat there patiently rubbing her back until she fell asleep. I carried her back to her bed, and when I went to lay down, she refused to let go of my neck. I carried her back to my room, knowing if I forced her to sleep in her own bed, no one would get any sleep. So I gave up and laid down next her, holding her in my arms. It was when she rested her little head on my arm inside my embrace, it was the first time felt the pride and love of a father.

About a half hour later, I heard little feet running into my room. I saw a little body diving over me, reminding me of a flying squirrel. A clammy, tiny hand clutched the back of my arm. A warm small head dug itself deep into my back, Michael decided to join us. He woke up from a terrifying nightmare of robots.

It took a few more days of listening to the pitter pattering of little feet running it to my room before I figured out Alexis’ nightmare. Her teddy bear came to life and grew fangs, it’s eyes would turn from black to red as it chased her around her room. The next evening I took her and her teddy bear outside. I had to rip off the poor teddy bear’s head and burn it in front of her. However, I didn’t know how to deal with robots, so I burned all the robot movies and told Michael the robots melted and died with the movies.

Like I promised to King Anthony, I have declared war. Even with the devastating loss, I still had stronger men than him, this war would be easy.

“I wanna fight,” I looked up to Michael who was standing tall in front of my desk.

“You’re too young.” Even if he was a thousand years old I don’t think I could find it in me to allow him to fight the simplest of wars.

“But they killed my grandparents and took my mother away.” He pleaded, I knew he had good reasons to fight, but I would not allow him.
