I tried to catch all the cuss words in this chapter. If you catch one, let me know. I will be more than happy to change it.
“Paul, McKayla’s missing and probably completely distraught. Send a search group out for her.”
“Right away,” Paul answered.
“If you hear anything call my cell, don’t use telepathy. I don’t want to take any chances of Bruce knowing she’s gone.” I hung up the phone with a sigh. I couldn’t sense her anywhere nearby.
Hoping the necklace she wore was wrong, I rushed down by the waterfall. Her bench was empty. I ran to the kennel to see if I could find her there, doubting she would leave the building. The wolves lying peacefully around in the grass and in the woods were all that were present. Her leaving on her own will didn’t make sense. She knew she would be in danger if she left the building and that I was having Alex brought here.
After an hour of frantic searching, always coming up empty handed, Paul called. “Some of the peasants saw her on the edge of the grounds. She was running towards Blood Mountain sobbing and hysterical. I already sent some guards to her parents’ old house on the edge of the mountain and some more to fan out and go further up the mountain side.”
If I had a beating heart, I’m sure it would have stopped. I caused her to run, and during the worse time possible. My only prayer was she would come back before dawn unharmed. I had to swear to myself not to hurt her for running away. She was already an emotional wreck and it was my entire fault. I will never forgive myself if she gets hurt or even worse, killed.
Paul called back another hour later. “Her parents’ old house was empty, not even her scent was picked up there, but the men did pick up a scent near the house and are now following it.”
A sense of excitement overfilled me, my men were faster than her and it wouldn’t be long before they caught up. Even if they couldn’t make it back by dawn, at least they could find shelter for her. She doesn’t know how to survive outside during the day and she’s too young to withstand the sun for long.
A few hours have past. I have been pacing my room nervously. They should have caught up to her by now. A knock at the door stopped my pacing in mid stride. “King Ethan,” Sean said.
“Come in,” I answered. The sound of his voice was unsettling.
“Alex and Andrea are here,” he said opening the door. “Queen McKayla isn’t with them.”
“Of course she’s not,” I said. “That would too easy. Lock them downstairs. Since Alex wanted McKayla so bad he can wait for her there. What she’s about to face is all their fault and when she comes around, I’m sure she’ll want revenge.”
Sean’s face went blank for moment before he spoke. “Done, they’re being locked in the torture chambers right now. Have you tired zoning in on her?”
“Nonstop, there’s a block in our connection. I know she’s alive, but I can’t talk to her or read her thoughts.”
“Does she know how to block you out?”
“No,” I said shaking my head. I closed my and rubbed my forehead, trying to connect with her again. Just like every other time, I got nothing. It was like hitting a brick wall in pitch blackness. I came back around with a massive headache. “This makes no sense, we have his witch.” I rubbed the headache away and sat behind my desk felling helpless.
