Chapter 12

I woke up early this evening, not delaying in bed like I normally do. I scheduled the trails to be at midnight, after McKayla, Alexis, and Sarah’s nap. I set up guards to secretly to go the mall and watch over the girls tonight at 11:30. Giving them specific orders not to be seen by the girls, unless in the case of an emergency and even then, if at all possible, I didn’t want the girls to know there was an emergency. This would be their day to have a normal life. Just three girls out on a shopping trip. When I was done with my calls I crawled back into the bed and held McKayla as if I never left her side until she woke. She had no clue of the calls I had made.

I must have dozed off, because the next thing I remember was McKayla shaking me frantically, whispering my name. “I’m up. What do you want?” I didn’t want to wake up, so I kept my eyes closed, ready to go back to sleep.

“I hear heart beats,” she barely whispered in fear.

“It’s only the twins. Give me ten more minutes.” I turned my back to her, intended on getting ten more minutes of sleep.

She flipped me back over onto my back. “The twins are not in there kennel.” She whispered through clenched teeth.

“I know, their on the couch. So be quiet they’re sleeping.” I whispered back becoming frustrated.

“They’re on the couch?” She questioned just a tad bit louder than she was.

“Please, McKayla. Just ten more minutes.” I huffed rolling over wrapping my arm around her waist.

“Why are they on the couch?” She asked as I could hear her excitement building.

I smiled with my eyes still closed as my consciousness began to set in. I tighten my hold on her before speaking, “Because you, Sarah and Alexis haven’t gotten them their bunk beds yet.”

I listened to the silence as what I said was sinking into her head. “Me, Sarah and Alexis?” She questioned in disbelief and shock.

“Unless you’d rather go to the trials?” I teased, seeing how far I could take this.

Once again I listened to the silence, I opened my eyes slowly only to find the most priceless, confused face. All of a sudden her face lit up, “I’m going shopping without you!” She yelled in excitement, obviously forgetting about the twins.

“Yeah, and I love you too,” I said sarcastically. I looked over to the couch seeing two little blonde heads groggily looking over the back.

I let go of McKayla and she popped up out of the bed chanting, “I’m free” while doing a victory dance around the room in only my shirt. She has been free since the day she died. I guess I need to give her more personal space so she knows that.

I rolled my eyes at her as I sleepily got out of bed and went over to the closet to get dressed. “You girls want some pancakes?” I yelled over McKayla’s chanting and dancing to the twins, knowing they wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep while McKayla was here.

“Yes,” they yelled back in unison over McKayla’s big mouth.

The room suddenly became quiet, and then I heard a loud, “I know! Isn’t it great?” I peeked out of the closet and saw McKayla on the phone. I told Jay I wouldn’t be able to stop his phone from ringing. He must have caught on to the warning and told Sarah the same time I told McKayla, because I didn’t hear my phone ring. “I don’t know, I didn’t ask?” I heard McKayla respond to Sarah with a great amount of thought. “Ethan! What’s the catch?” I could hear the anger in her voice.

I walked out of the closet, putting on my most innocent face. “Does there always have to be a catch?”

“With you, yes.” She was now on the brink of fury.
