Kalani was sitting at her writing desk reading over her notes for  history. Kalani was the star student, she got 100% on every test, handed in her homework days early; your typical stereotype.

She was transferring her notes onto note cards when she heard a knock at her bedroom door. "Come in!" She yelled, tucking in her chair.

"Hey," A familiar voice said.

Brandon, Kalani's best friend, was at the door wearing loose fitting jeans and a dark blue button up shirt. Sure, they were mistaken as girlfriend and boyfriend but Kalani preferred 'just friends.'

"I brought over all my textbooks so you choose what you want to study." He said and Kalani noticed his camouflage school bag.

"What about maths? It's always been your downfall!" She grinned playfully, punching him in the shoulder.

The pair were very competitive over their results. If one got even a percent higher, the other would never hear the end of it.

"Ugh, you've for sure got a pole up your ass!" He rolled his eyes.

"Yeah, but you love me!" Kalani winked.

But only Brandon did, and he had ever since he came up to her on the first day of year seven.

Brandon walked into those huge gates, he'd seen them every time he drove past but it was different this time; more daunting.

He finally had the courage to enter. But what he didn't have was courage to stand up to those bullies.

"Hey Brandi!" One of them called.

"Nice textbook!" The other laughed.

Brandon stopped and stared but he was very scared.

Suddenly a girl with long, brown hair appeared.

"Hey, leave him alone! One day when he has a well paying job with no fiancé struggles you'll be wishing you were as good as him!" She yelled grabbing him by the arm and dragging him away.

"T-thank you!" He said in awe.

"Don't sweat it!" She said.

"Hello?" Kalani exclaimed, waving a hand in front of his face.

"Sorry," he mutters outing his head down.

After reliving that memory, all he wanted to do was kiss her like the first time he saw her. The feelings were stronger now and he couldn't keep them held inside of him any longer.

But it's Kalani! She doesn't like me like that.

So instead he put his head down and fond the page about negative numbers. That's just how it works for Brandon, he never gets the girl.

Kalani was writing down notes about the negative numbers, not realising her friend was upset and it was all because of her.

"What's wrong?" Kalani noticed Brandon's face was pulled into a frown.

"It's nothing," he was meant to say, so Kalani wouldn't know his secret.

But instead, he leant forward and kissed the girl of his dreams.
