Maddie opened her door. "Thanks Clo, I guess I'll see you tomorrow?" Chloe nodded and waved goodbye. Maddie entered her small house and sighed. It was a horrible day and now she had to face her mother, who would bombard her with questions. As soon as she opened the door, she immediately wished she hadn't. Glass bottles were shattered everywhere, photos of Mackenzie were ripped into pieces and Maddie's mother was in the midst of it all, crying.
"Tell me!" Her mother screamed. Her voice was rasped and tired and Maddie instantly felt an immense pang of guilt. "Tell me what happened to my baby!" She yelled again. Maddie slowly closed the door and walked over. I guess it's now or never, she thought. Maddie moved some shades of glass and sat down next to her mum. She took a deep shaky breath and finally started to talk.
"A few weeks ago, I can't remember how many, I was, um, graffitiing-" her mother shook her head in disappointment and Maddie took again shaky breath. "A teachers car, for a pretty selfish reason actually, and he came out and I ran. But as I was hiding, I saw a note next to me. It was a threat and it said '1000 words, then you're gone.' I didn't understand at first, but then I realised that as soon as I said 1000 words, someone would kill me.
"I then found out that three other girls got the same threat also. So, we worked together to try and capture the words squad and turn them over to the police. But then Kendall-" her mother interrupted her in shock. "You mean Kendall Vertes? The girl who committed suicide at-" her mother stopped herself. "Oh."
Maddie continued. "They killed her and at school today the tried to kill me." Melissa's eyes brimmed with fresh tears and Maddie tried to talk a bit faster. "But Mackenzie heard them and wandered over and they decided to kill her instead." Melissa took a steady breath. "But I don't understand. If you have 1000 words, then how come you're talking freely?" Maddie tried to think of a good way to say it.
"I already used them. But nothing's happened so I guess they're putting it off." Melissa hugged her. Then she gently pulled Maddie off her. "I-I think I just need to be alone right now," She whispered. Maddie nodded and stood up to go to her room. She heard another bottle being shattered as she entered her room.
Maddie closed her door and turned around and was greeted by a figure in black. Not even jumping, Maddie turned and walked over to her bed. She collapsed onto her bed and sighed. Her sister had been killed and now she had a stalker/ threatener in her room. Plus she had just told her poor and suffering mother about everything.
"Bad move Maddie. You shouldn't have told your mum. She's already been put through enough. A double funeral? And she's knows what happened and she can't tell anyone? Geez."
"What the f*ck do you want?" Maddie muttered. They walked over to her bed and sat on the edge of it. "If we went back a year ago, you would've never said those words. You were good girl Maddie and watch out! Another A is coming her way!" They laughed sarcastically. Maddie imagined the horrible smirk on their face, taunting her.
"Yeah well, we can't go back to a year ago and I've changed so get over it!" She exclaimed. The person looked taken aback and regained their confidence. "So, you really are quite the rebel, aren't you? You rebelled against your mum, teachers, friends and word count. Haven't you been a naughty girl? Most of them are ok but your word count isn't. Well I'm here to punish you!" They said and quickly grabbed Maddie by the waist and Maddie fought back. She punched them in the gut and that made them let go of her. But they regained quickly grabbed out a white facecloth.
Maddie knew better then to breath in, but her air was running out and she needed some air. So, she breathed in and had a fuzzy vision. But then it turned to darkness.
