Kalani walked up the front steps of her house. Tonight is the ball. Yay. She thought. Her mother was so excited as this was the first high school dance Kalani was going to but Kalani thought it was because she couldn't say no, or anything.

"Kalani! I want you to do your homework, then come downstairs and I'll help you get ready!" Her mum called excitedly. Kalani rolled her eyes as she didn't want to go, she didn't want to pretend to be Brandon's girlfriend, she didn't want to 'dance and have fun,' and she certainly didn't want Kendall to be killed.

She opened up her history homework and started on learning about WWII. She just had to answer a few questions then she was done. Fifteen minutes later, she slumped down the stairs to her over excited mother. "Now, hair up or hair down?" Her mum asked.

Kalani looked in the mirror and was actually kind of happy with her look, her hair had a waterfall braid, her makeup was a natural look and her light blue dress went perfectly all together. Her corsage was light blue with pale green leaves.

"You look stunning, honey!" Her mother said, tears brimming her eyes. Kalani smiled and said thank you. Beep beep! Brandon's car honked. "He should come in, that's very rude!" Kira said shaking her head.

Kalani's sparkly flats made a soft noise down the stairs. Brandon was still sitting in his car, waiting for the most beautiful girl in the world to come. The thought didn't occur to him to maybe go inside and get her instead then beeping the car.

Kalani raced to the car and slammed the door shut. "Really, Brandon? You know you're meant to come inside and get a picture with me for my parents!" She said rolling her eyes. Brandon's face dropped in sadness, he'd ruined his princesses night! He sadly started the car and they started the ten minute drive to school.

In Pittsburgh, there were a few parts of town. One, the posh neighbourhood, Kendall's neighbourhood. It had limited houses but they all had either a pool, tennis court, volleyball court or all of them. The houses were always two or more stories, not including the basement, and a beautiful spiral staircase.

Two, the rich neighbourhood. This was Kalani's neighbourhood which had nice houses which were mainly one, or two if you were lucky, stories with a common staircase. They sometimes have a pool and the neighbourhood wasn't very dangerous. There was high security but if you were a robber, you'd go there.

Three, the common neighbourhood, Chloe's neighbourhood. This neighbourhood had one story houses that were small but not tiny. They had little to no security and robbers normally went there. The families that occupied it normally worked their butts off to pay the bills and had a bit left over to spend.

And finally, the bad neighbourhood, Maddie's neighbourhood. This was the neighbourhood that had shootings as common as the mail being delivered. If you had a murder case, you'd always check there to find the body. It was every man for himself and surprisingly, Melissa had raised two girls in that neighbourhood. So don't you think she deserves a pat on the back?

"We're here!" Brandon said snapping Kalani out of her daze. The parking lot of school was packed, and Kalani doubted that he would find a spot. A couple arguments and horns beeped later, they found a spot out the front of the school.

Brandon raced out of the car to open her door and Kalani begrudgingly accepted. They walked into the parking lot with Brandon linking arms with her, parading her around. Kalani felt like she would be better off studying or something worth her time. But she felt like she had to be here, for Kendall.

"Kalani!" Maddie screamed. Kalani saw her new friend in a black dress, something she would never wear. "Brandon! Isn't that Lucas?" She said shooing him off to the other guy. She ran over to Maddie and gave her a hug.

"You came!" Maddie rolled her eyes playfully. She looked over at Brandon and raised an eyebrow. "He told his mum he had a girlfriend so I had to do it for him," she explained. They chattered for a bit until Brandon came over. Kalani didn't quite hear them, but Maddie ended up punching him in the nose.

Kalani made sure he was okay, then realised that Maddie had gone. "Are you alright to go in?" She questioned. He nodded with a big bandaid plastered on his nose. They pair walked in and gave their tickets to Miss Miller.

"How are you, dear?" She asked concerned. Kalani just shrugged her shoulders. How was she meant to say, "I'm great! You know, just casually one of my friends is possibly going to be murdered tonight. Be prepared to clean up some blood!"

She walked in and was surprised at the decorations. The D.J was playing some random song, the dance committee was still rushing around and many girls were flirting with their dates. Brandon lead her inside to their assigned table. Kalani almost gagged as she realised she was sitting with Lucas and JoJo, the most disgusting people ever.

They were the one who would pick their nose and eat it, dip their food in their drinks and wipe their fingers in their ears. She saw them touching each other's noses and trying to be all romantic. Kalani almost puked. "Uh, I think I'm going to get something to drink," she whispered before running to the other side of the hall.

"Excuse me," she said to a couple locking lips. "Excuse me!" She said a lot louder. They finished their game of tonsil hockey and moved. Kalani poured herself some punch and heard someone on stage.

It was Maddie, and she was shooting silly string at people and her eyes finally locked into Kalani's. "Stay!" She mouthed as her eyes travelled away. Kalani turned and saw what she was staring at.

She was staring at Kendall K Vertes.
