It was the night of the Gala ball and everyone was so excited. They went to the hairdressers in the afternoon, then went home and did their makeup and got dressed. Then, they're dates would arrive and have an awkward one on one with her parents. She'd come down the stairs and everyone would stare in shock at how beautiful she looked. Then, they'd have dozens of photos then leave and start the car and go to the school, completely in love with their dates.

Except, that was the complete opposite of Maddie. She was currently on her phone, being persuaded by Chloe to go to the ball.

M- I'm sorry balls aren't my thing... Just stop trying
C- Kendall needs us there for self defence so suck it up, find a dress and come. I'll bring your tickets...

Maddie thought about it. Kendall did need help with self defence, she couldn't run if her life depended on it, like now! Maddie thought. She still hated Kendall with a burning passion and but she needed her help, and after all the girls have done for her, she can't let her down.

So, Maddie typed a quick reply to Chloe saying yes, then looked through her wardrobe. She threw ripped denim jeans, leather jackets, band shirts and a skirt that her mum forced her to get because it was Chanel or something. Then finally she saw it, a black dress. Sure, it looked like something the Pretty Little Liars girls would wear to a funeral, but it was all she had.

So she changed out of her school clothes, which consisted of shorts over leggings, a black tank top and a denim jacket. As Kendall would say, she had no fashion sense. Anyway, she got dressed into her dress, then pulled her hair into a ponytail as that was all she knew how to do. And she couldn't ask her sister to do it, because she would ask where she was going then tell Melissa and make a big deal over it.

So, she grabbed her phone and wallet and put them in an over the shoulder bag then jumped out of her window. Since the school was only two streets away, she quickly ran there, hoping to meet Chloe or someone.

Instead, she found Kalani and Brandon.

Kalani was let out the day before with just a few minor injuries that had healed up pretty good. Her body had just been in shock from the crash so she slipped into a coma, but she was fine.

Kalani had a blue dress on and that's all Maddie really cared about. Brandon looked all giddy and acted like he had a princess or something where as Kalani rolled her eyes and looked like she wanted to be anywhere but there.

"Kalani!" Maddie called, and Kalani looked over and her eyes looked so relieved. "You  came!" She said running over. She left Brandon talking to one of his friends. "He told his mum he had a girlfriend so I had to do it for him," Kalani shrugged. "He is making the biggest deal out of it and I'm sick of it!" She sighed as Brandon came over.

He looked Maddie up and down and gave her a disgusted look. "Kalani dear, why don't we go and head inside? You don't want to be talking to, um, whoever this lower class is." He said pulling her away.

"Excuse me?" Maddie yelled after them. Brandon turned around and came back over to Maddie as Kalani gave Miss Miller the tickets. "Listen here. Kalani does not need to have people like you in her life, you look like you're going to a funeral and we all know that you're behind all those pranks! You're just another bad girl, Madison. No one cares about you anymore, so just give up-" Maddie punched him in the nose.

"Kalani deserves better than a stuck up sh*t head like you! So why don't you just give up!" She whispered into his ear as he was holding his nose. "Kalani told me that she's sick of you anyway," she finished and walked away. The teachers were trying to get the culprit to come back but Maddie sent him a glare and he knew better.

Finally, Chloe arrived without a date, like Maddie, and gave her a ticket. She looked really upset, like she had all week because of Nia, but Maddie didn't want to bother her. "You look nice!" Maddie said. She was wearing a maroon coloured dress and had her hair pulled into a bun.

Maddie liked Chloe the best out of the group, she was laid back, always up for a challenge and she made some remarks like Maddie. They were made to be best friends! Kalani was nice, but a little bit too stiff for her liking and Kendall, well... We all know how she's like.

And in that split second when Chloe gave Maddie her tickets, she realised that she never would've been friends with her if she didn't get threatened. And suddenly, Maddie found the positive side of something, and that made her very, well, happy.

"You look gorgeous, ladies. I like that you two are going as friends," Miss Miller said as they gave her the tickets. "Thank you," Chloe said politely as Maddie was surprised that Miss Miller was being nice to her.

The dance committee really had outdone themselves with the theme, 'A Night Under The Stairs.' The ceilings were covered in glow in the dark stars, lighting up the whole room! The table and chairs were set for four and they had a black table cloth covering them.

Her dress wasn't that out of place, as the theme was black, blue, silver and gold. Eat that! She felt like screaming in Brandon's face. Chloe was talking to a few sporting friends and Maddie was left, all alone. Maddie wanted to go find Kalani but she couldn't leave Chloe alone. So, she stood next to the punch bowl and poured herself a cup.

She ended up having three as she waited for Chloe. Finally, she finished talking and they tried to find Kalani. "What colour dress was she wearing?" Chloe screamed over the music. "Light blue!" Maddie screamed back.

They weaved in between the crowd and Maddie saw the stage. A brilliant plan came to mind. "Stay right here! I'll be back! Just dance or something!" Maddie screamed to Chloe who gave a confused nod and started dancing to this is what you came for.

Maddie found a door read backstage and opened it. She was backstage and there were loads of people yelling instructions and other things. The D.J was on the stage and Maddie knew she had to go on there. She was either going to be embarrassed by the entire school or cheered for.

She grabbed a can of silly string and ran onto the stage. She sprayed it onto the audience and looked for Kalani. Everyone's backs were turned and nobody payed any attention to her. She saw Kalani by the snacks table then saw what everyone was looking at.

Kendall K Vertes.
