When Ella came home that night, she tried looking for Mary but she was no where to be found.
Ella guest that she was trying to avoid her again.
Just the thought made her wanted to cry.
“Come on, Ella. Let’s go to sleep.”
“No, not until I clear this up with mom.” Ella refused to rest until her heart was content.
Chun tried dragging her to bed but she kept on refusing.
“Go to bed first, I’ll come later.” Ella finally told him and he finally agreed.
There was one room left she hadn’t check and that was the baby room.
Surely enough, she found Mary huddled in a corner staring at a baby doll.
“Mom?” Ella whispered.
At the noise Mary quickly wiped her face trying to hide the tears.
Ella was scared to talk to her. Scared to get rejected again.
But she couldn’t lose the fight now. It barely even started.
“I’m sorry--” Ella started.
“Can you stop apologizing?” Mary asked in a irritating tone. Ella took in deep breaths and tried not to show how much she was being hurt. “I’m over that now.”
“Then why are you still mad at me?”
“Ella, I’m mad at you because you didn’t consider what I thought about it.” Ella was confused. “You never asked me what to do. And when you said that I wouldn’t accept you because you came from an orphanage, it broke my heart knowing that you thought of me as a person who looked down on lower classes.” Mary puffed out a breath of anger.
“I love you no matter where you came from. And if my grandchild is from an orphanage, or from royal blood, I don’t care. I am going to love it the same, because you went through the trouble of bringing the little child to me.”
It all began to make sense to her now.
“I’m--” she was going to say ‘sorry’ again, but remember that Mary didn’t want to hear it.
“I didn’t know.” Ella finally said.
“of course you didn’t know. Just because we’re from high statues doesn’t me we hate the others.”
Ella always thought that since they were rich, they all looked down on the lower classes.
She was wrong.
Maybe living with the Chengs had made a deep scar for her.
“Sheng would have been proud of you if you adopted a child.” Mary said after few moments of silence.
“You’re just like her. She couldn’t give birth, and either can you. Either Chun or Andrew wanted a child. Maybe you are destined to adopt a child. After all, look what happened to you. You‘re happily married.”
Mary had a point there.
If Sheng hadn’t adopted her, she would still be stuck in the orphanage with Tank, for who knows how longs.
“You’re more like Sheng than Li. And Li’s your real mother. You should have seen the look on her face when you talked about Sheng. She was as pale as a ghost.”
She never did get close to Li, and a part of her didn’t want to, even though she promised Andrew.
“go to sleep. We’ll talk about the adoption papers tomorrow.” Mary said. Just as Ella was about to leave Mary stopped her.
