"Calissa! Where in the wide world have you been?"

She whipped around, her heart pounding as the door slammed behind her. She quickly moved her hands that held the hat and mask behind her back, concealing them from her friend. The darkness before her moved and Emilia stepped out with her hands on her hips. Her lips were pursed as she stared down at her. The only light that was present was the small lamp shining from the wall, radiating on their faces.

"I'm sorry, Emi," Clarissa said, quickly making up an excuse, "I guess I lost track of the time."

She raised her eyebrows, crossing her arms, "You always say that. Look, I know you like to take walks at night, but could you at least come back on time? The darkness is not a friendly place to be. I heard the other day that robbers came to the neighbouring village and kidnapped a child."

"That was a long time ago," Clarissa pointed out.

"That doesn't mean it doesn't happen," Emilia narrowed her eyes, "One of these days, you'll see how scary this world is."

"I know, I know," she tried to calm her down. The lamp beside them flickered and she grasped tighter to her mask, "I'll be more careful," she promised.

"Why do I get the feeling like I can't trust you?" Emilia narrowed her eyes.

Calissa sighed, "You don't have to worry. You can trust me. After all, I do come back safe every time, don't I?"

Emilia glared at her for a few more moments before sighing, "Alright. I guess it can't be helped. You always did suffer from a bit of a wanderlust."

Calissa smiled softly as she watched her friend disappear into the other room. Once she was gone, her shoulders slumped in relief and she raced down the hall into the bedroom.

Calissa opened the door, letting some light from the hallway in. It was a small room, only holding two beds and a drawer that was squished in between them. A lamp sat on top, but it hadn't been lighted in ages. The glass was shattered and more than once Emilia had wanted to throw it out, but she always kept it for a keepsake. She said that is had been one of her lucky lamps that took her through the darkness nights.
