"Did you find the source..." A voice whispered through the air.
"Nothing's..." It faded through the clouds in her mind.
"Check again!"
The voices barely reached her mind. They were muffled and foggy, like she wasn't really there. She strained to hear, but slipped in and out of focus and never caught any words. Something suddenly came above her and she felt the presence of magic lure her in. It was warm, but uncomfortable, like it was trying to dig deep into her mind.
Calissa tried to twist away, but if anything, she stayed all the more still. She tried moving her head, her fingers, her toes but they weren't listening. Even her eyes seemed to be glued shut. Her body didn't seem to be hers anymore.
"There's nothing on her..."
"Check again!"
"It's a waste of time... give up..."
"Not until we find out..."
After that, her concentration broke completely and the sounds merged together until nothing made sense anymore. Her mind went numb and the warmth she realized hadn't been there disappeared. The coldness was back, choking her. Though she was asleep, she felt restless. A piece of her longed for something and somehow, she was overcome with nostalgia then.
A soft slam sounded somewhere in the distance and fear pierced her without knowing why. Her heart thumped in her ears until it was the only thing she could hear. Then slowly, her world of darkness faded until it was replaced by the overlapping of foliage against the blue sky.
Her heart still thumped, hiding the sounds of the carriage as it bumped across the pathways. The sun sparkled through the holes in the leaves, dotting the ground and flashing its brilliant light.
A shadow loomed over her and Calissa raised her eyes, grinning as a blurred face came to stroke her hair. The hands were soft and loving, and another figure came over to her side, holding her hand in a warm embrace. Their bodies were blurred images, like someone had scribbled over them with ink, but even then, she could tell they were smiling back too. Then they were gone.
