Dear Emilia, I am writing to you for the last time in a very long time...

Calissa marched along the streets at the sight of dawn. It was the day when the conscripted men would be gathered and taken into the barracks at the castle. She watched from the street as one man from each family headed towards the town square. Their backs were strapped with packs full of home cooked meals and their heads overflowing with memories of their families. They waved goodbye to their mother, their father, their siblings, with the all-knowing fact that there was a chance they wouldn't be able to come back.

As you know, I left you a few days ago to visit a friend of mine in the neighbouring villages.

She combed her fingers through her hair, but they came out too early for her own comfort. She still wasn't used to it. She had cut her hair short the day before due to Simon's request. He had said it would help her disguise as a boy. It now sat just above her ears, and accompanied by her plain features, there was no one that would be able to see through her disguise.

They have been more than kind. But while I was there, something drastic came up. Something that I could not refuse.

The masked man had generously given her a full body armour and a few extra weapons to keep with her. This was one of the times Calissa was relieved that she had such a boyish figure. She was smaller than the average girl, but because of that she was able to wear the armour without any problems and even had enough room to tuck some knives in without struggle.

She put up her hood of her cloak and blended in with the crowd of men. It felt so strange to walk without Rudi by her side.

I can't disclose much of the information, but I will say that simple truth-- the dark is closing in.

There were circles of soldiers surrounding the square, deciding which were the ones who could enter. She approached the borders after a group of men. She made sure everything was in place. Her knife was in her boot and her sword was strapped around her waist.
