"For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12)We read the Bible because...
1. It Makes You Much Wiser
The Bible isn't just another book on the shelf. It is a book of advice! It helps us learn to make the right decisions about every day things, and with good decisions comes a good life.
2. It Helps Us Overcome Temptations
The Devil throws temptations of sin at us every day, and usually more than once a day, but the Bible teaches us how to overcome those temptations and gives us advice on how to approach those situations.
3. Reading Your Bible Gives You Peace
Life is pretty chaotic sometimes, especially if you're like me and have 5 (8 if you count steps) siblings and divorced parents, while taking all four pre AP classes along with band and choir... Life is chaotic ALL the time! Things happen that are beyond our control and we tend to get so stressed out about it, when really all we have to do is read our Bible! All throughout the Bible we are given assurance that God has got everything under control, that he loves us very much, and that he's got a place prepared for us in Heaven that is beyond our greatest dreams. I don't know about you, but that makes me smile and gives me peace and joy within!
4. The Bible Gives You Direction
Sometimes in our lives we get a little lonely. We feel lost, like we're just wandering around uselessly and we don't know what to do. But that's what the Bible is for! The Bible gives us direction and leads us every step of the way. It reminds us that God has a plan and a purpose for our lives. It helps us keep moving on.
5. Builds Your Relationship with God
Our relationship with God is a very important thing in being a Christian. Reading the Bible grows that relationship and gives us a better understanding of him.
6. We Can Learn a Bit of History
The Bible helps us to learn and understand a little bit more of human history and how we often repeat the same mistakes, and then how to fix them.
7. We Can Understand Jesus a Little More
Was there ever a time in your life when God was talking to you and maybe he asked you to do something for him, but you didn't really understand why he wanted you to do it? Reading the Bible helps us understand why he makes the choices he does. It also teaches us more about the life of his son Jesus Christ, and helps us understand the choices he made during his lifetime and the true sacrifice he made dying on the cross.
8. It Can Change Your Life
When you open your heart to reading, learning, and studying the Scriptures, you begin to see yourself and God like never before. You understand your true condition and the gift of forgiveness through the work of Jesus on the cross. You begin to grasp the power of the Holy Spirit that allows you to turn from sin and enjoy a life of unspeakable joy. The deeper into God's Word you go, the deeper changed you will be.
9. It Brings You Back to Faith, Rather than Religion
Sometimes we get caught up in the weekly motions of our religion by going to church every Sunday, saying a prayer before we go to bed each night... But through it all, we've lost our faith. We've become a fan of Jesus, rather than a follower, but reading the Bible brings us back to where we need to be with God. When we open our Bibles, we open ourselves up to remembering and strengthening our faith.
10. Reading the Bible Brings a New Perspective
Sometimes your life just seems wrong, like everything's just been flipped over and you can't seem to get it back to normal, but reading our Bible reminds us that there are different ways to solve your problems. It reminds us to look at our struggles with a new perspective. Like when one pops up, instead of being all pessimistic and "Why, God?" about it, we thank him for it because we know it means that he is working in us through those struggles.
God also commands us to read and live by the Bible.
"And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God." (Luke 4:4)
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
"Search the scriptures (since you assume by how you read them that you have eternal life)! These are the very scriptures that bear testimony about Me." (John 5:39)
