I set my guitar against the low window and held onto Persephone. She jolted awake and looked into my eyes.
"Rayle. You weren't near me. You weren't going to catch me. You scared me so much. I don't know how you could-"
"Persephone. Shhhh, it's me. It's Redd. Rayle isn't here. I caught you, you're okay."
The tiny figure in my arms started to tremble. I felt hot tears running against my arms.
"It's okay, I'll get the doctor. They need to know you're awake. You've been out for almost a month now-"
"NO! NO NO NO NO! Don't get anyone! I will pull out these cords! Don't go! Not yet! Please, Redd. Stay, please..."
I could see the worried look in her eyes. I knew I couldn't leave her. I held onto her and looked into her eyes. I spoke the words that I had promised her almost a month prior.
"I promise that I will, Persephone. I won't leave you. I never have."
She looked into my eyes with a deep sorrow. A tear fell down her cheek and slid down onto her oxygen tube. She opened her mouth and pushed out two almost inaudible syllables.
"Thank you."
"I love you Persephone." I looked into those sad eyes of hers only to see a new glimmer of emotion. I saw the happiness flash through her and reflect back into me.
"Do you promise?"
"I swear to God above that I do."
"I love you too, Redd."
I leaned over the bed sheets, cords, tubes, and small wires to place my cold against her cheek to wipe away her tears. She smiled at me and in that moment I knew that she did in fact love me. I smiled at her and gently pressed my lips against hers.
I pulled myself back to see a glistening set of eyes smiling back at me. I knew I loved her; I had felt that in the pit of my stomach since the first day we met.
"I have to tell the doctors you're awake now, okay?"
She nodded her head slightly. I reassuringly squeezed her hand and got up. I walked to the door, turned back to Persephone and smiled. No matter what she looked like she was always so beautiful. I opened the door and stepped out to find the doctor.
***
Persephone was awake, and her healing process had gone well. She was going to be okay. Her mom had left work early to come visit. As soon as school had gotten out, I went straight to the hospital.
When I got there Persephone's mom was sitting next to Persephone. They were talking quietly with one another. I didn't want to interrupt so I sat patiently in the waiting room.
As I was waiting a doctor walked past me and into her hospital room. I decided this would be a suitable time to go in and visit.
I carefully stepped into the room behind the doctor. Persephone was in her bed, sitting up. I smiled at her and leaned against the doorway. She smiled back at me, then turned her attention towards the doctor.
"...internal bleeding hasn't seemed to be a problem. Coming out of her coma could bring that up. You may realize you have slight loss of memory, but then again you may not. Now, we will be putting you on antibiotics to take care of your wounds and help them heal faster. Your leg is still broken, but will be healed soon. You've been out for a while."
"So, when do I get to go home?"
"I figured you would be asking that," he smiled at her. "You should be able to go home in four days."
Persephone looked at her calendar and looked at what date it would land on.
"So, that would be November 5th?"
Her eyes looked sad, but she smiled anyways.
"Alright. I'm really excited."
The doctor nodded and walked out of the room.
"Oh, I better be going. I have work at 7 tonight." With that her mom nodded at me and walked out of the door.
I turned towards Persephone who looked like she was on the verge of tears.
"Persephone, what's wrong? You get to go home soon."
"I know. It's just that I was out for so long. I missed Jake's birthday."
"I'm sure he's okay Persephone. He won't be upset with you."
"It's not that. I've always made him something for his birthday and it's just something special between us."
I thought about it for a second and came up with an idea. It would be fun to do with Persephone considering she hasn't been able to interact with me too much. I was excited for this.
"Where are you going?" She called at me.
"I promise I will be right back."
