"Get the gas out here" Dan said while crouching next to Mia ready to put the gas in. We were currently on the side of the street in the middle of nowhere without gas. Great for us. I took the gas container out of the back and gave it to Mia while I walked over to the other side of the car to check on Lucy.
"How's the gas situation going?" Lucy asked knowing I was walking towards her.
"It's under control. We'll be out on the road again in about five minutes. Dan will be driving this time, and Mia will be sitting with you if you don't mind" I informed her while sitting down on the ground with her. She was fighting to cry of course, who wouldn't? Her wife and one of her children just died. I still can't believe someone like Gretchen was Lucy's kid, but I still feel for Gregory. Poor guy was trying to save his sister. I would've done the same.
"Not at all, Mia is quite the character" Lucy chuckled with the thought of my sister. I knew what she meant, she was the lighthearted one, the energetic one. I was like that once, before all of this happened. Now I'm more calculated and careful; more aware. I knew once Mia and I were safe I could be myself again, but until then I had to focus.
"Yeah she is, got it from our father" I replied without thinking and immediately regretted it. Memories of my father and Mia playing football in the backyard flooded in my head. For the first time since all of them died I'm glad. I'm glad that they don't have to go through all of this.
"He must have been quite the man then. To raise such brave young ladies" she smiled at me knowing I didn't want to talk about him.
"Yeah he was" I replied silently feeling nauseous. We killed them.
Before I could start feeling sad I shot Lucy a small smile and stood up walking around the car again where Mia and Dan were.
"How's my baby doing?" I asked standing next to Mia who was watching Dan getting some berries from a near by bush.
"The car is ready to go, but I think it's best if we calm down for a few minutes. What happened back there was intense, and they're taking it well considering it was a few hours ago." Mia told me while checking her watch. I realized I haven't checked on either Gretchen or Caleb since we stopped. Where the hell are they?
"Yeah, where's Gretchen and Caleb?" I asked her while looking around.
"They're behind that tree over there" she told me while pointing at a tree not so far away. What are they doing over there?
"I should check on them right? I mean they ju-" I started saying while walking their way but Mia stopped me and pointed again. There they were. Kissing. Ok wow, I didn't see that one coming.
"That's not good" I said turning back around and leaning on the car again. Relationships out here don't work. Well, they can't.
"Their emotions are all over the place. Let them blow off some steam. Well not steam as in that steam you know, I mean, I shouldn't know about that I jus- never mind." She sighed not wanting to explain herself much longer. I chuckled at her little outburst. I know she knows about that. I just never expected her to be so defensive about it.
"Yeah, never mind" I said still smiling while I looked at Dan coming back shushing us. What now.
"There are a couple of zombies around the bushes." He whispered.
zombies? He's totally a gamer. I have stumbled across a couple of them in our way here, but they're smart. It's somewhat useful.
"I got it" I said walking towards the bush and crouching slightly with my knifes in each hand. I saw them just limping around there, and for a moment I felt bad.
