I opened my eyes and sat up in the bed. I looked at the window and saw rays of sunlight on the floor. I wonder if it would burn me? I slowly inched off of the bed. I walked slowly and cautiously to it. I put my left big toe in the light and clenched my eyes shut, bracing myself for pain.
Nothing happened.
I walked towards the window and opened up the curtains. Sunlight bathed my face. The warm light felt good against my hard and cold skin. I heard the door open and turned myself around. It was Ella. She saw that the curtains were open and her eyes widened with fear. Her skin started to make a sizzling noise and smoke came from it. She screamed out in pain.
“Shut the curtains!” She screamed at the top of her lungs.
I shut them fast.
Why was I able to be in the sunlight and she wasn’t?
She breathed a sigh of relief when her skin stopped sizzling. She had burns all over her face, neck and arms. Within seconds they disappeared.
“Why does the sunlight burn you and not me?” I asked.
“Because you still have your human blood in your system. You’re still making the transformation. Enjoy it while it lasts.” She said and half smiled.
“When will it start to burn me?” I asked.
“In a few days.” She answered.
“Would you like something to eat?” She asked.
I nodded furiously. My throat and stomach burned.
“Come along then.” She said and walked out of the bedroom.
I walked out and followed her closely from behind. We walked into a huge dining area. The table was long and wide.
“Sit.” She said. I did as I was told.
A few minutes later she came out with a huge tray of food. I frowned. This wasn’t what I had been craving at all.
“I know this wasn’t exactly what you had in mind but it’ll help with the cravings.” She assured me.
“Why can’t I just have what I want?” I asked.
“Because we can’t run around killing people all the time. Sooner or later they would find out about us.” She said.
She got a plate and put eggs, bacon, pancakes, and sausage on it. She placed it in front of me and gave me a fork. I took a small bite of eggs. It didn’t taste all that bad, but it did absolutely nothing for the burning sensation like blood did.
Ella examined my face.
“Okay, if it’s really that bad you can go find yourself a nice bunny out in the woods.” She said.
I immediately pictured bugs bunny.
“Does it have to be a bunny?” I asked hoping she would say no.
“No, but it does have to be an animal. If you run into any hunters you need to come back here immediately.” she said.
I nodded. She walked me to the front door.
“Now, I’m trusting you on this. I’m letting you go by yourself. If you don’t return, we will come find you and it won’t be pretty.” She said sternly.
She hid behind the door as I walked out. She slammed the door behind me.
I took a deep breath. Breathing in all of the scents. I smelled pine trees, grass, wild flowers, and the animals that inhabited the woods. I ran until I came across a deer. It was nibbling on grass in front of me. It looked so peaceful. It was blissfully unaware that it would be dead within the next few seconds.
