Faith's POV
"Daddy?"
I glanced at Zayn, and all he did was look at Alex nervously. I felt bad, I could tell that he really did care about Alex and he wanted to build a relationship with him but at the same time I couldn't blame myself. It was his fault for leaving us. He did this to himself.
Looking back at Alex, he looked in a state of lost and confusion. My baby of three years old shouldn't have been given these news. He was too young for this! I knew I should have waited to tell him but telling him actually lifted a weight off my shoulders and I couldn't help but be glad I told him.
"Yes, baby." I placed my hand on his little arm. "Zayn is-"
"No!" He shouted all of a sudden. "No, no, no, no, no!"
And with that he ran out of the kitchen and into his room.
"Alex!"
I got up and ran quickly to his room, ignoring Zayn who was following behind me.
I opened the door to his bedroom and immediately my eyes landed on Alex who was sitting on his bed, looking down at his hands.
I sighed, thankful that he didn't go all berserk like I had expected him to.
I walked over to him and sat on the floor next to him, my back leaning against the bed.
"Hey." I rested my hand on his knee while he continued to look down at his knees. "I know this is a lot baby but-"
"Why'd you leave us?" He interrupted me and I knew what he just said wasn't meant for me to answer. "Why did you leave mommy and me?"
Zayn looked at a lost of words. He wasn't expecting Alex to be so calm from the news and ask him questions instead of screaming and yelling that he hated him.
"I.. Got caught doing bad things that you can't hear about." He answered the curious boy. "The police had to take me to a place where people who do bad stuff go."
"Did you mean to leave us?" My curious boy asked.
Zayn shook his head. "No, of course not." He walked over from his leaning stance on the doorway to the floor like me but in front of Alex. "I never wanted to leave, especially when your mommy was pregnant with you. It was the hardest thing I had to do."
"Listen, Alex. I know it was bad of me to do what I did, believe me when I say that that's my biggest regret. But I came back for you and your mum. I wanted to fix this with both of you and become part of your lives again. It seems dumb but I really want to get to know you and I don't want to leave you, my family ever again."
The next thing Alex did was again something both of us weren't expecting.
Alex got off from the bed and took a step or two before hugging Zayn, wrapping his arms around his neck.
"Thank you." His little voice said.
---------
Zayn's POV
"Why are you packing?"
It was eight o' clock and Alex was already tucked in bed, asleep. I still couldn't believe that he was going to give me a chance to fix everything.
When he hugged me, he truly meant it. I thought that it'd be because he felt forced but when I felt his little arms around me, I knew that he wasn't acting. He really wanted to get to know me as his dad.
And nothing made me happier.
Faith was packing books into her backpack although I didn't know why.
"I have school tomorrow." She answered as she zipped up her backpack and placed it on the couch.
"School?"
"Yeah, I go to college."
"How?"
"I got a lone." She smiled. "They know I can't pay for it but they gave me a free lone. I don't have to pay them back as long as I graduate."
"But why would they give you a free lone?" This didn't make any sense, the government doesn't let anyone get a lone without having to pay back.
"I just do, okay? Stop it with the questions." She said before heading to her bedroom, me following after her.
"What about Alex?"
Faith grabbed her pjs before heading to the bathroom and closing the door behind her. "I take him to the daycare."
"What if.." I could hear the tap of water turn off.
"What?" She came our changed in her rabbit pjs and her clothes in hand as she passed me again and into her bedroom.
"Can he stay and I take care of him while you're in school?" I asked before I could stop myself.
"What?" She looked up from putting her dirty clothes in the hamper.
"I can take care of him." I spoke more surely.
"You sure?" She asked hesitantly.
"Yeah." I assured her.
"Okay." A smile grew on her face.
"Okay." I nodded, not knowing what else to say.
She laughed light-heartedly before slowly closing the door, me behind it. "Night Zayn."
"Night." I said before walking over and flopping myself on the couch, wondering about what was going to happen tomorrow when I'd spend a day with my son. My Alex.
----------
"I'll see you later okay? Be careful."
Faith kissed Alex's forehead once again before heading over to the door.
"I know mommy." Alex said, slightly annoyed from Faith's words which almost made me laugh.
"He needs to eat again at two and his nap is at three, okay?" She looked over at me.
"I got it, you can leave now." I laughed.
She glared at me lightly before closing the door behind her.
Alex turned around and stood in front of me, looking straight at me. "What are we going to do?"
"Um.." Shit.
"How about we head over to the park?" I asked him.
"Okay." He shrugged and went to his room to come back in a batman sweater.
"You sure do look super heroes don't you?" I asked as u knelt down to his height and helped him pull up the zipper.
"Yeah, they're awesome." He smiled.
The fact that a three year old acted so maturely made me question how Faith had raised him. She had changed too, maybe she didn't want to be the only mature one. Both of them were, I wasn't, not really.
"Which one's your favorite?" I stood up and got his small backpack from the table that Faith had packed for him before leaving just in case we went anywhere, or she didn't think I knew how to make a sandwich and grab a juice box from the cabinet.
"Mm.." He thought as we exited the apartment and headed into the elevator. "Batman, I think. He's so cool and he can fly."
I nodded, agreeing with him. Batman was pretty cool.
"What about you?" He looked up at me.
"The Hulk." I answered almost immediately.
"Really?" He raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah, why?" I laughed at his facial expression as the elevator stopped and the doors opened, us walking out and out of the apartment building.
I could see the guy at the desk from a few days ago that didn't let me enter staring at us but I ignored him, deciding that it'd be best to punch him without Alex nor Faith present.
"He's green and fat." Alex answered as we walked through the sidewalk.
I laughed. "That's a bit mean, don't you think?"
Alex shook his head. "They teach you it's good to tell the truth, but when you say the truth, everyone gets offended."
Wow. "You're a smart kid."
He shrugged again. "It was how mommy raised me."
"Yeah, I can tell." I huffed as we entered the park. "So do you wanna play or..?"
He nodded and ran over to the swings quickly. The park was pretty small and only one or two other kids were hear with their moms who wouldn't stop staring at me.
You'd think that they'd think why a kid has an ex criminal and wonder if they should call the cops but instead they're swooning over me.
No thanks.
I ignored their stares and looked at Alex who was swinging back and forth.
"Come and play!" He yelled at me.
"Uh.."
"Please!" He begged.
I sighed before walking to the swings and yet again ignoring the mum's awes as I settled on the swing next to Alex and swung with him.
Half an hour later after swinging, we hopped off and played on the other playground next to the swings.
I learned a lot about Alex. Even though he was mature for his age, he still was a little kid of his age. He liked to play pretend super heroes and begged just like a little kid would when he wanted to be the winner of the game.
And I couldn't help but love him.
I loved Alex.
As we exited the park two hours later, I began walking and Alex ran to me.
"Daddy, wait!" He said before getting ahold of my hand and walking beside me.
I couldn't be any happier.
