Melanie's POV
"Mommy, when's daddy coming home?" My 3 year old daughter asked me, barely half awake. We were in mine and Justin's room, watching her favorite movie, the Little Mermaid. Her head was on my lap and I was gently brushing her hair with my hand.
"Soon, babygirl." I said softly, the guilt consuming me for lying. It was already 11 pm, way past her bedtime but she wanted to sleep in my room for the night because she wanted to snuggle with Justin. I wouldn't blame her though. He's never here and I swear on my life that he's not going to be here in a couple more hours. I sighed as Alana yawned for the tenth time and rubbed her eyes. "Why don't you come lay down here?" I patted the pillow next to me.
She shook her head. "No mommy. I don't want. I'm waiting for daddy to come home."
"I know baby. But look at you." I slightly pouted as I noticed her eyes a little red. "You're tired. I promise you that when you wake up, daddy will be right next to you." I half smiled. I was disappointed at Justin but I was too tired to call or text him.
She sighed softly, sitting up slowly from my lap. "Okay." She muttered sadly, pausing and looking at the door, possibly hoping that Justin would just walk in.
Alana finally crawled, or more like dragged her tiny body to the pillow next to me, laying her head down lazily. "I'm sorry sweetie. I'll make sure daddy's here tomorrow." I smiled at her.
"Okay mommy, goodnight." She held my hand in hers as she brought it up to her cheek, closing her eyes.
Leaning down, I kissed her forehead. "Goodnight baby, I love you."
I heard her mutter "I love you too" as I leaned my body to grab the remote, carefull not to pull Alana since she was holding my hand, and turned off the tv making the room completely dark.
Justin's POV
"Dude, knock it off!" Alfredo yelled, crouching down as Kenny repeatedly smacked him with the stuffed hammer that we were all playing with for the whole day.
"You guys! That's enough!" Scooter yelled, making them stop. I smirked as they sat back down on the chairs around the table with their heads hung low.
I looked down at my phone and realized that it was already 12:17 am. I sighed. "Scooter, when can we go home?" I asked. We were usually done by 2 am but I promised Melanie that I'd be home by 10. Guess I just lost track of time.
"Right now actually. Good job today you guys. See you guys tomorrow." Scooter said. Everyone got up and started saying bye.
I got in my car and called Melanie. After 3 rings, she still didn't pick up and I knew she was sleeping. I wasn't too worried about her getting mad though. She wasn't that type of holding grudges. Plus, this happens all the time so I guess, I have nothing to worry about. I did feel bad since I promised her that i'd be home early.
I parked my car on the driveway at my house. I got in the house, and carefully closing the door, not wanting to wake anyone up since the house was completely silent and dark. I walked up and went straight to Alana's room to kiss her goodnight even though she was sleeping. It was a routine for me every time I got home from work.
Opening the door, I was greeted by an empty bed. I furrowed my eyebrows, panic rushing through my body. I quickly ran to mine and Melanie's room to tell her that Alana wasn't in her bed, only to see my wife and daughter snuggled in the bed, peacefully sleeping. I sighed in relief.
After getting ready for bed and taking off my clothes, I went to bed, laying down, making Alana in the middle and Melanie and I. I turned to my side and carefully lifted my body over Alana and kissed Melanie on the cheek after whispering i love you. Laying my body fully on the bed, I kissed Alana on her forehead, making her almost immediately turn her tiny body against my chest. Smiling, I wrapped my arms around her lightly and fell asleep.
