CHAPTER 1
K POV:I woke up earlier than I needed to this morning and decided to get ready for my interview this afternoon. I don't really like the fact that I had to transfer schools after my fifth year was over, but rather that than risk my own safety, at least according to my parents. Plus after the last incident and the attack on my family's estate, they weren't taking any chances. I was literally sent out of the country for protection on multiple levels.
I already know that I'm going to miss my home and my old school, Alexander's Magic School in Louisiana, but it can't be helped now. I would have transferred to Houdini's School of Magic in Canada to stay closer to home, while still being out of the country, but they wanted me to retake half the classes I had already completed. Like I would really do that. Plus according to dad, it wasn't far enough away to ensure that I'll be safe from Zeldalia and the rest of her minions.
Honestly, I'm just lucky that my family was well known and respected enough in the United States Ministry of Magic to be on close terms with the other Ministries of Magic around the world. I never thought having so many relatives in office would be so helpful after having it been so dangerous, but it definitely was when I had to get permission from the British Ministry of Magic to study at Hogwarts. They weren't pleased when they found out what exactly I was, can't say that I blame them though. Many people aren't, I lost the best friend I'd had since first year last term when she accidently found out. Haven't heard from her since.
Hogwarts, if I get to stay, will definitely be a different experience though I'm sure. I had heard a lot about Professor Dumbledore. He's a powerful wizard feared by all dark wizards it seems, but honestly after meeting him I think he is a bit crazy. After I got ready I left for the Three Broomsticks early and arrived in a matter of seconds. I was a few hours early but it didn't matter too much because I was greeted by Professor Dumbledore in Hogsmeade, shortly after my arrival. I was immediately invited up to the castle to meet with the rest of the Professors and go over everything that I would need in the upcoming school year.
The fact he welcomed me so eagerly was weird but he was pretty weird himself. I'm used to the formal wear of robes in the wizard world and wore a set of dark blue robes to meet with him, but he showed up to meet me in Hogsmeade in orange leather boots, silver robes that seemed to match his beard, a bright red and gold belt, and a green pointed hat with blue stitching on it. That was definitely different from the normally dull and drab outfits that professors wear but after speaking with him for a few moments I'm most certain that he is crazy.
He didn't stare at me with hate or fear when we met, instead he walked up smiling with a twinkle in his eyes and shook my hand welcoming me to the school. He didn't stall or ask if I really wanted to come here or try to talk me out of it. He just acted as if I was already a student. He walked right next to me, not disgusted to be close to me, as we headed up to the castle. He didn't comment on how I walked or how I had to tendency to sniff every new scent I came across. He simply pointed out different things along the way, or talked about the castle and the school in general.
He didn't have anything negative to say at all it seemed, the exact opposite of the past four headmasters I've met with. He then proceeded to introduce me to the Professors in such a way someone might have thought he was glad I was there. How much is my family having to pay for this kind of treatment I wonder? Almost makes me glad that money is never a problem if I'm being honest. I'm sure that my family is paying extra though after this treatment.
Especially since most of the Professors showed more or less the same amount of kindness. Professor McGonagall welcomed me with a small smile and said she was looking forward to seeing how I got on in her Transfiguration class. She was also more than surprised and pleased sounding finding out I was an animagus. However, I probably should have warned her that mine is lioness. She was not only shocked when I changed back but was astounded that mine was such a rare animal. I simply gave her a small shrug in response and then a small smile, as she smiled over her glasses and said she would look forward to classes in a few weeks.
Professors Flitwick, Sprout, Madam Hooch, and Madam Pomfrey all met me with the same amount of enthusiasm and kindness. The rest of the professors that I met, but wouldn't have for a class were just as welcoming as the rest. There was in fact only two exceptions to the greetings that I had with the professors. That was potions and care of magical creatures.
The potions master, Snape, did not meet me with much kindness but honestly I have yet to meet a friendly potions master. I almost wonder if that's why I love that class so much. I remember Snape's sneer on his face and how it was constant, never changing the entire time that Dumbledore spoke with him. It didn't look like a sneer of disgust though like I'm accustomed to, in fact I think it may the only expression he has. I bet he would be a fun guy to get to know, full of his own secrets from the looks of it. Surprised by my lack of fear for him as well it seemed.
Flashback to earlier in the day
"Ah, there you are Severus. I have been giving Ms. Harrison here a tour of the castle and introducing her to her Professors. This is Professor Snape, potions master and head of Slytherin house."
"Dumbledore you know that I only take students into my upper level potions classes if they receive high enough scores on their O.W.L.s"
"Ah yes, well I believe you will be having Ms. Harrison after all. She received an Outstanding in Potions."
"Well then I will be seeing if you are actually capable at brewing a decent potion then Ms. Harrision."
"Yes Professor Snape, I suppose you will."
He doesn't say anything else as he sneers at me one more time and nods back to Dumbledore before turning on his heel and walking towards the dungeons. His black robes twirling behind him as he does. I had the strongest urge to attempt Legilimancy on him, but something told me he was well practiced in the art of Occlumency. I dare not risk it unless I'm absolutely sure. I turn and walk back outside with Dumbledore as we head off to meet another professor.End Flashback
Meeting Professor Hagrid was a different experience from Professor Snape all together. He's the professor of my favorite class Care of Magical Creatures, but something tells me the class may not be all that great after all. Meeting him almost made me say screw this I'm quitting school. He was not very keen on the idea of being the one to guide me to the Forbidden Forest when I needed to go. Plus I could smell some of the fear coming off him as he looked at me. The fact that he was part giant and able to squish me, well if he could catch me, but was scared of me actually hurt. I tried not to do anything that could frighten him, as in even look at him but apparently but I failed.
It also didn't help that when his giant dog came running from behind the house I instantly met it halfway and started to pet him. Hagrid had given a small yelp when I had taken off towards the dog, named Fang apparently. I guess he thought I was going to eat his dog, I mean honestly if it had been a different time of the month the thought might have crossed my mind but not now. I just love animals. His fear didn't disappear though, even though I could hear Dumbledore whispering to him that I could be trusted and I wouldn't hurt anyone or anything under his care, blah blah blah. Same thing I've been telling people for years but they never seem to listen.
Hagrid was the last of my Professors to meet, except for the Defense the Dark Arts, but that Professor wasn't here yet according to Dumbledore. So, after Dumbledore gave Hagrid one more encouraging whisper we headed back up to the castle and into his office. Again I was reminded how crazy he was because the password to his gargoyle door was 'Acid Pop.' That simply has to be a first for a Professor's password.
His office matched his personality though I have to say. Among the dozens of portraits of what looked like previous headmasters, were all sorts of unusual and even weird looking items. There was a beautiful phoenix sitting on a perch near a window, books lining the shelves, as well as every type of magical device you could think of scattered around the room. I paused for a few seconds just trying to take everything in when I heard a small chuckling a few feet in front of me.
I realize that Professor Dumbledore had taken a seat behind his desk and was peering at me through his glasses. I quickly mutter an apology and sit in the chair in front of the desk. He tilts his head at me and I know he is trying to get a read on me, so I let him. Why not get it over with I suppose. I wait for him to break our silence, unsure of what I would even say to break it to begin with. I won't beg to be allowed to come here. I have enough of my pride left to keep from doing that, for now anyway. Luckily it looks like he knew he would have to be the one to break it.
