"Hey Shawn! Over here!" I say as I wave.
"Ohh. Um hey Amelia." He says shyly. "I wouldn't expect to see you here." He says.
"Well I don't have anything better to do, so I'm here. Trying to make something out of myself." I say lightly.
"Who's your teacher?" He asks.
"Mr. Rogers, and you?"
"Same here."
"Wait seriously?'
"Yeah."
"Finally I have this class with someone I know!" I say.
"Haha yeah" he says calmly, obviously thrown off by my excitement since we've only said a couple sentences to each other this past year.
We stand there awkwardly next to each other for a couple of minutes until the bell rings. Not saying anything to one another, just standing there.
The bell finally rings. Shawn and I, and the rest of the students walk inside the bungalow. Mr. Rogers stands up from his computer and gives us a soft smile, and small nod.
"Welcome incoming sophomores and juniors" he says. "I am Mr. Rogers. I am your geometry teacher for this class. Right now I'd like for you all to stand up against the other side of the classroom and wait until I call your name from my clipboard. Once I call your name I will point at a certain seat and that will be your seat for this class. Alright let's get started."
As I was walking towards the other end of the classroom, I'm drawn by a really sweet scent. Like a cool mint kind of scent? I don't know. Then I notice it's Shawn. That's probably his cologne. He smells really good, maybe this is what all the hype is about. He smells really good. I mean I didn't think he smelled bad or anything. You just wouldn't expect him to smell like that. To smell that nice. I mean would you think a boy that's always wearing hoodies, a pair of black jeans, and classic black sneakers to smell this nice? I don't think so.
"Amelia?"
"Do we have an Amelia Lawrence?"
I break out of my thoughts once I hear Mr. Rogers call out my name.
"Yes?" I ask.
"You're gonna be seated right in front of Mendes here" he says as he taps lightly on the top of the desk.
At least I sit with someone I'm familiar with, not necessarily friends with, but he's all I have in this class. Hopefully I make a couple of new friends so I don't have to experience anymore awkward silence with Shawn.
I tried to make small talk with him, but he just kind of blew me off. So I just paid attention to our first geometry lesson, and just did the worksheets for the rest of the period. I don't even know why I'm taking Geometry, I took this Sophomore year and passed. At least it's really simple. I don't get why people always complain about how difficult it is. Just pay attention, ask questions, do the class work, and you're good to go. Not much to it.
My thoughts start to die down, as I start eavesdropping a conversation that these two girls in front of me are having. I know this isn't the best thing to do, I know it's none of my business, but I don't have anything better to do. I'm done with my class work, there's 20 minutes of class left, so why not?
"You guys would be so cute together!"
"Chill out Diana, we haven't even spoken to each other yet"
"See? If you don't make a move on him, you guys will never even get to the talking stage!"
"Shhhhh! He's 2 seats away, he'll hear you."
"We didn't even mention his name, we could be talking about anyone"
"Like who? He's the only decent guy in this class."
I'm done listening. That conversation was starting to bore me. They were just rambling on about Shawn. He sits two seats away, and that girl Diana kept looking back and giggling. They're giggling like a couple of annoying Catholic school girls. Maybe instead of gushing over a boy, they should finish up their work sheet. They haven't even touched it since Mr. Rogers passed them out. Gosh, I really need to calm down with these thoughts I'm having right now, I sound like a snobby know-it-all.
*RIIIIIIIING*
Finally! I can't wait to see Jack and have him pick me up. I haven't seen him in a couple of weeks due to football practice at the new school he's attending. He surprisingly made it on varsity, so I shouldn't be complaining about not seeing him enough. I have to be happy for him. I have to support him. At least he can squeeze me in to his schedule and pick me up from school.
"Amy." I hear Shawn call.
"It's Amelia." I snap.
"Wow, I'm sorry." He apologizes. "Where are you heading?"
"I'm getting picked up by Jack in the front."
"Oh. So you're walking to the front?"
"Yeah."
"Aye I'll walk with you"
"Okay" I say. Wait I'm confused. Why would he want to walk me when we're just acquaintances?
"So uh how are you liking it here?" He asks.
"Um, it's okay. It's not that bad, I just have to adjust to this sudden change."
"Yeah it's weird. I miss the homies. We were all a pretty tight group, ya know?"
"Yeah I get you."
"How are you and Jack?"
"We're great. He's doing great with football, and I think I'm doing a great job supporting him."
"You should get nominated for the Girlfriend of the Year Award. I'm sure you'd win."
"Thanks. I think I already know that." I say playfully.
"Ohhh woah there. This is why I don't compliment you." He says with a chuckle.
"You don't even talk to me, let alone compliment me."
"That's because you're always with J-" Jack's father's car horn cuts him off. What a beautiful sight of a marvelous mini van. Every girl's dream.
"Hey I'll see you tomorrow. I can see Mr. Gilinsky's car from a mile away. Bye" I say cheerfully.
"Bye."
