"So Jack left this morning?" Patty asks me while we're cleaning up our grandmother's living room since a family get together is going to be held here tonight. Everyone is coming. Well almost everyone is, we always have this big potluck at my my grandma's house when my cousins come each summer. It's actually pretty fun, all of my uncles and aunts come over, there's always great food, we all share some weird yet funny family memories that we have all experienced when we were kids. The adults also discuss the memories and funny moments they had when they were children.
It's basically like a Lawrence family festival. It's one of the few things I look forward to when it comes to family. I'm not saying I hate seeing my family or that I try to avoid family related events, but they're just not as fun without my cousins and aunt from Ohio. My aunt is my dad's older sister, but what makes the family get together so big is because my dad has 8 brothers and 2 sisters. Almost every one of my uncles and aunts have children so it gets pretty packed.
"Yeah he left. I really wish he could have stayed a bit longer so he can meet all of you guys." I respond.
"Don't you think it's weird that he's never insisted on meeting your family? I mean you guys have been together for over a year." She questions.
"He's just very private when it comes to our relationship. But that's not completely true, he's met my parents."
"Yeah I get that, but I mean I'm sure he knows about us. I'm also sure that he knows that we're a big part of your life." She says.
"Chill out. You're not a big part." She looks up and starts giving this weird death stare. The type of death stare where she squints her eyes at you.
"I'm kidding. Of course he knows. I'm always talking about all of you." I say.
"Well why hasn't he met us?"
"It's complicated. He's just weird about it, I guess."
"I'd honestly much rather meet Shawn than Jack." She tries to say lightly. I suddenly feel my breath hitch at the sound of his name.
"Shawn? Why would you want to meet him?"
"He just seems really funny. If he can make you laugh, he can for sure make the rest of us laugh."
"I mean it wouldn't be weird to invite him to a family thing right?" I ask.
"No, he's just a friend right?" She asks with a sarcastic smirk.
"Yes Patty, and that's all he'll ever be." I say in an annoyed tone.
"Then call that boy up then!"
"I don't know, he didn't show up to school today and hasn't texted me about it."
"Then text him first. There's nothing wrong with that."
"Yeah, I should just send him a quick text." I pull my phone out and start typing up a text.
Me: Hey where were you today? You could've given me a heads up or something?
I wait a couple minutes for a reply and eventually got one.
SM: I'm sorry. I'm busy with something.
Me: Are you going to be busy with that thing all day?
SM: Yes I will. I have to go now.
  Me: Bye.
What fuck was that? It was like he was too busy to even text me back. I get that you can be busy, but God he really made me feel like I was bothering him. This is why I don't text people first. If he didn't want to talk he could've just said so, he didn't have to be rude about it. Well technically I wasn't sure if he was saying this in a rude tone because he texted me his words, not his tone. Whatever. This isn't going to get to me. I have a long and fun night ahead me, I refuse to let his rude behavior get to me.
I hear Nayzeth come down the stairs.
"Hey I heard Shawn might be coming over."
  "He's not." I snap.
"Why not? I was actually looking forward in to meeting him.
"I don't know, he just said he was too busy."
  "He said that?"
"I mean he didn't say that exactly, but in a way he did."
"Well I hope he changes his mind, we're only here for 11 more days. I hope we all get to meet him before we go back."
  "Maybe."
  "Are you mad?"
  "No, why would I be?"
"It just sounds like you're mad."
  "I'm not mad."
  "Okay, if you say so."
"I know so." She goes to the fridge and gets a Naked juice. She starts heading back upstairs and says "Well I'll be upstairs getting ready with Patty, she's going to need to someone to help do her hair. Let me know if lover boy changes his mind." She says while she's going back up the stairs. I just shake my head and laugh to myself a little bit.
I just wonder what he's doing, that's all. I know it's none of my business since I know nothing about his personal life, but he could've at least given a heads up about today. I didn't have to show up on the last day, I could've just slept in this morning.
What if he's out with Mary? No, he said he wasn't that interested in her. But I mean what could he have been doing? Obviously something pretty important since he basically cut me off. I wasn't even asking for much, I was just wondering if he wanted to come over. He could have at least heard me out, and maybe thought about coming. Then again, I shouldn't be acting up. I'm not his girlfriend, I'm barely his friend. We're barely friends actually. He's not obligated to tell me anything about his personal life and neither am I. Maybe this is somewhat of a sign for me not to get too attached to him. I wasn't planning on to, but I thought we had a great friendship going on. I guess not.
I should probably just brush this off, maybe he is actually busy with a family matter or something. I have to stop overthinking this situation. He has his life to live and I have mine. I should probably just focus on my own life since more important things are going to be going on tonight. Important family things. Shawn isn't family, therefore he shouldn't matter to me. Well at least not right now. Nothing that I do affects him, and nothing he does affects me. That's exactly it.
I'm just going to join everyone upstairs since I have to start prepping up for tonight as well.
